Seasonic Flex ATX PSUs

Seasonic SS-135NP Flex ATX 135W Power Supply

This is the psu I've been thinking of using in a Mini-ITX system. Does anyone have any experience or info they can share about it? I can't seem to find much and the Seasonic website doesn't seem to have much except a pdf of some of the specs. Also, I see they have other flex ATX psus. But I can't find anyplace that sells them. Specifically, I was thinking the ss-120nq looked good. Does anyone know where I can find any of these?

Thanks.

I was looking at the higher powered 180watt unit... I am leaning toward seasonic because of the favorable review that mike gave the 300W unit. Hopefully the quality translates to these other models...

Hey Mike How about a review of these smaller models??

It so happens I have a Seasonic Flex ATX PSU I have played with a bit. Not that particular one, but similar -- SS-120NQ. All the SS PSU have the same fan control circuit; the main question is what fan. Judging by the dimensions, I think these PSUs would have the same size fan. This one uses a 60mm Adda AD0612HS-D70GL. 0.13A. I am sure you can look up the details of its specs.

It is quiet on startup. The main issue is a kind of buzziness that I think is caused by the fan electronics (very common, not unique to this fan). It's at a low level; in a case it could be made inaudible. Better, I am sure, than having it going full blast.

Yep, interesting. I've asked for a review of FlexATX and MiniITX PSUs on the site feedback section, here:
http://forums.silentpcreview.com//viewtopic.php?t=2614 No response yet!

The smaller PSUs were noisy because of shrieking 40mm fans, on the outside of the case, crammed next to components causing poor airflow through the unit. We're starting seeing some mini-PSUs now with 60 and 80mm fans, like the Seasonic, and these have to be quieter, with good potential to use the PSU fan as a case extractor fan too, which would reduce the number of fans required overall.

I'm soon to email round the PSU manufacturers with a sort of 'spec challenge' for them to come up with a super quiet mini PSU. Ideally this would have an 80mm fan on the inside, mounted on rubber isolators, with wire grill (so fan can easily be changed), and with a thermistor and circuit to adjust fan speed to temperature. I don't feel the cost of these is likely to be too much, it's probably more that they either haven't thought of it, or aren't convinced there's a market. They are definitely wrong onthe last point.

Seasonic products are not easy to source. MikeC, where did you get your SS120NQ...?

Enhance have just started supplying ENP-2320 PSUs for the Shuttles and these are reported to be the quietest Shuttles yet, unfortunately not available through resellers (as Shuttle are taking ALL the production so far... nuff said).

Every email they receive saying "do you make a small and very quiet PSU?" will encourage them to look into this.

SPCR, can you add your weight to this...???

Welll, here's the response to that review request: Time and resources are huge issues for the running of SPCR. The editorial work is all mine, even when the core writing is a from a contributor, because there is editing / imagery / html work to be done. And SPCR is supposed to be something of a hobby. I am actively seeking someone to help me with this. BUT I see the importance and value of reviewing other FF PSU too.

And that probably answers question #2 -- I got it straight from SS in the second shipment of samples they sent me after I posted the SS300 PSU review.

And yes, why don't you simply work in a line to the effect that you are doing this research as a writer / journalist for an article in SPCR? Ask them to send me samples for review, give them my email address.

Hello MikeC, and no probs, I didn't mean to sound even remotely impatient... :D :D This site is superb and your hard work very much appreciated. It's ben invaluable to me...

Thanks, I'll mention SPCR when I email people in a week or two, and copy you in, and we'll see what happens

Who was your contact at Seasonic, and do you feel a 60mm fan (rather than the ubiquitous 40mm) makes much difference?

As I'm just starting to move this from my hobby to a small business I'll be getting samples in too and will post results etc on the forums.

Cheers :!:

Flex and Micro ATX PS

Post by NeilBlanchard » Fri Jan 17, 2003 6:59 pm

Hello:

You can find several brands of Flex ATX PS on this page including SeaSonic and also HeroIchi, which was mentioned on another thread here on SPRC as being very quiet:
