My current PSU is on it's last legs, it is a 550w budget one bought nearly three years ago.
My current setup is:
Athlon 64 3700+ w/ Arctic Cooler
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
Radeon 9250
Terratec DMX 6Fire Sound Module
1x SATA HDD
3x IDE HDD
1x Pioneer 107 DVD-R/W
4 Case Fans with this akasa fan controller
I am also looking at upgrading to a X2 4800+ and adding another HDD next month.
This system is for general use but is used mainly as a HTPC - I do not play games on it.
I have wanted to quieten down my sytem for a few months and now is the perfect time to start with a new PSU. From reading reviews etc I have narrowed it down to the following:
Seasonic S12-500 (~£75)
TG500-U25 (~£75)
I was also looking at the TG580-U15 as being modular would be a big help, however, I need a PSU that does not have a fan on the top of it as the PSU sits at the bottom of my case underneath my array of HDDs, therefore heat would just be blown onto my HDDs.
Can anyone offer any advice on the PSU's mentioned above or even a different one that would also be suitable in a system that will eventually become a HTPC?

Seasonic S12 series

I just got a seasonic s12-330, and I'm really pleased with it, it's by far the quietest supply in its power range I have dealt with.
The seasonic s12's have a big 12 cm fan on top of the supply, but it sucks air into the psu, which is blown out the back. If I understand your arrangement, this should, if anything, provide some cooling for your hard drives, by making air flow over them on its way into the psu.
Also Seasonics (and other quality supplies) will provide substantially more power than a budget supply of the same rating would. Looks to me like the S12-500 would be ample for your system.

I would prefer a modular PSU, does anyone know how the Tagan TG430-U15 compares to the Seasonic S12-430 in terms of noise?
At 50% load I believe both models would hit 23dB (according to their respective datasheets).
Modular connections would be highly benefcial to me, however, I don't want to risk a noisy PSU.
Can anyone offer a direct comparison between the 2 models mentioned above in this post?
