Is there a good <$30 PS unit out there?

Hey everyone,

In my search to change my power supply/CPU fans I ran across this site. I'm very glad I did because after doing the sound test I found that the CPU fan isn't really making that much noise. It could stand to be a little quieter, but I can't even hear it against the soft vacuum cleaner noise my power supply fan makes. I figure instead of spending $20 or so on the fans I'd do better to upgrade the whole power supply unit (as I've found the power supply unit makes the next most annoying noise after the fan has stopped)

I want to stay under $30 though, because spending like $50 for oddball parts doesn't make sense on a $200 computer. Do you guys know of any decent power supplies I could get for this price. FYI my machine is an Emachines D3024 that uses a 300 watt power supply.

Thanks

The Fortron-Source are good and should fit your budget. Newegg has the 400W 120mm-fanned version for $42, but the 80mm-fanned versions are cheaper and available in lower power ratings too.

Your power supply might be proprietary, and thus a replacement wouldn't work without modification. I know dell does this, I'm not sure about E-machines. It's worth doing a couple of google searches beforehand. Also, have you looked into merely swapping the fan?

Emachines psu are not proprietary, I replaced one at my school with a normal 350w. Recent Dell psus aren't either, I'm running my cellie 1.7 box off a 250w Dell psu. I can recommend the Hipro HP-E4009F5WR. *newegg link*

That hipro looks awesome. I'm probably going to pull the trigger on it but just to make sure it's compatible, how do I figure out what kind of case I have? The hippro is designed for an ATX 2.0 and I'm not sure if I have that.

Also, my current PSU fan points out the side of the unit and out an 8cm grill on the case. The hippro fan is on the top of the box. Is that going to be a problem?

This Rosewill fan seems extremely popular, has anyone used it?

Rosewell is like a box of chocolate. You never know what you're going to get, except fat. Or screwed, in this case. Rosewell is a grab bag. You can have absolute crap, or something ok. I wouldn't gamble it.

Try the FSP.

The hipro PSU is totally compatible. It will fit in your case; in fact I replaced the psu in that same case (at school) with 120mm fan PSU.
