Corsair HX520W and Antec Sonata II

Post by mnerec » Thu Jan 18, 2007 11:04 pm

Hiya

I don't really know is this goes in the Power Supplies or Case and Dampening forum?

I'm having trouble with an Asus P5B Deluxe/WiFiAp and a brand new SP2-450W in my Sonata II case, as described in this thread New C2D build -> Asus P5B's Black Screen of Death on ArsTechnica. In the discussion I was referred to this fabulous site :D

I am considering putting a Corsair HX520W in my Sonata II, running a P5B MB with an E6600 with stock cooling.

I am using the CPU air duct, and have the 120mm back case fan running on low speed.

So now, my question is this:
Is the HX520W going to ruin the airflow, or is it going to work fine?

I can't answer the airflow question, but I do know that the HX520 is a VERY nice (noise-wise) PSU. I would say it will turn out fine. Also, the 120mm fan in the PSU, sucks the air out of the case IIRC (also sounds logical), so I'm not sure what your problem might be concerning airflow.

The reason I'm asking is because of the 120mm fan on the PSU. The original SP does not have a 120mm fan on the "belly", but rather a 80mm fan in the end, where the cabling is.

Since I don't know anything about airflow, I wonder if anyone has any experience with the HX520W in a Sonata II?

Will it interfere with the 120mm exhaust fan on the back of the case?

The 120mm fan in my S12-430 works great with the airflow in my Sonata, also using a Nexus exhaust (at 8-12V on a thermally-controlled MB header), an XP-120 with Papst fan (thermally controlled at 6-11V) in "suck" mode, as well as a 92 mm fan (at 5V) blowing across the hot-running VRM components above the CPU. I'm intentionally creating airflow that pulls air up from the MB to be exhausted by the case and PSU fans. You can see the fan arrangement in this photo.

Even under unrealistic sustained 100% loads, those 120mm fans all stay under ~900 rpm and temps (CPU, NB and VRM) are 47C or less. More typically, the fans are quiet at 700-850 rpm and temps are under 35C. All this with a 3.0GHz Northwoods CPU that is considered somewhat hot running.

if you are concerned about air flow, take out the air duct first...
