APC SMART UPS Coil Buzz normal?

Post by jimmyzaas » Mon Apr 02, 2007 12:42 pm

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knows whether the coil buzz of an APC SMART-UPS is normal. I got a SUA1000 recently and the coil buzz is quite loud. If the computer is turned on, I hear less of it but it's still audible since the computer is very quiet.

The noise is high pitched and intermittent. By intermittent, i mean the noise is not constant. It goes from low to high to none. It sounds similar to one that a refrigerator generates but is quieter.. is this normal?

I heard many UPSes make a coil buzz noise.. is there another model that is quieter?

Any feedback is much appreciated.

Thanks,

James

no coil buzz on my xs900. Just fan noise.

When on battery power - it's pretty buzzy.

When it's not running on the battery my unit is dead quiet (RS1500VA). When running on battery it's rather noisy as the fan starts etc.

Well, on a related topic..

Are there any KNOWN quiet 1000VA+ UPSs? I need to pick one up and I'm having a hard time deciding what to go with.

Did you read previous post?
Or do you need it to be quiet also during battery operation?

Also for what you're getting that UPS?

I'd like it to be quiet even during operation. I'd prefer not to be woken up in the middle of the night when the power goes out. My system is in the same room as my bedroom [and I'll be in a dorm eventually].

EDIT: I'm getting it for my C2D System, a 22" LCD as well as some basic accessories. I'd like to have some expandability for the future.

 They might wake you anyway because of the sonic alarm that usually confirms the battery operation.

I love my RS.

That can typically be disabled via a jumper or software. Or if I really have to I can just disconnect the speaker.

A Core 2 Duo and LCD monitor ... and 1000VA? Holy Batman, how long do you want to run from battery? (even including future)

I'd be surprised if I got more than 20 minutes on a 1000VA with my current system.

I've confirmed with someone else who has a smart ups 700va model that the buzz (sputtering noise) is normal. I guess i can live with it for the time being.. as long as my computer is on, it doesn't bug me that much.

I purchased my smart-ups versus a back-ups for the sinewave output lol.. i known the seasonic psu is supposed to be ok with stepped.. i just got sinewave based on recommendation from my friend

@Vulcan: 1000VA only lasts 20 min? How much power does your system consume typically?

I refused to get a larger VA because battery replacements for higher VA models are too expensive.

I'd wager a guess of 160-200W @ idle with monitor and some networking gear. Maybe 325-375W @ full load, which is not unusual... My system is at load more often than it is idle.

The APC fan even kicks in if you reach about 90% of max load and then it gets really loud :-(

I don't have buzz on mine either when it's below about 75%...

my UPS is fanless.. i'm almost positive it is.

I've discovered that the initial coil buzz i heard was due to the unit charging itself. Once fully charged (ie. all five lights on), it is fairly silent.

thanks for the feedback everyone.
