What can my Thermaltake 350W, erm, take ?

What can my Thermaltake 350W, erm, take ?

Post by BlizzardUK » Thu Apr 26, 2007 4:48 pm

I have just bought the following items.....

Intel 6400 Core Duo (fanless heatsink)
Gigabyte Motherboard (fanless)
7600GT (fanless)
1x 120mm case fan
5x SATA HDDs
HDMI capture card
Soundblaster Xi-Fi

I have a 350w fanless Thermaltake heatpipe cooled PSU. Will it be able to take the above rig ? Or should I bite the bullett and go for the Corsair HX520 or 600 that seem to be tugging at my wallett ? Any advice ?

P.S : I have a Akasa 460watt silent PSU in my other PC that is really quiet. Should I just buy a 500watt one of these instead of the Corsair ? I just see no one mention Akasa, so I am unsure if they are considered a good make or not. Does anyone know how the Akasa AK-P050FG8-BKUK 500W Green Power 80+ compares to the Corsair as far as noise levels go ?

350W is plenty for that system. You're fine.

Seriously ? A Core Duo with 5 SATA drives ? If so then great :) It will certainly save me money.

Yeah!

Here, let's be really extreme. E6400=100W, 7600GT=50W, Motherboard=20W, 5HDD's=50W, Capture card=20W, X-Fi=20W. That's 260W total, which is still perfectly safe for your PSU. Now know that these numbers are EXTREMELY EXAGGERATED. You will NEVER see this power draw. (Your system will be more like 150W under load.)

Keep in mind that that Thermaltake unit can actually output 300W, not 350W. Regardless, it doesn't matter, it should be able to power that system. As with any fanless PSU, insure that you have enough airflow to run it safely.

My 300W passive PSU (Silverstone ST30NF) feeds my system with no problems : C2D E6600, ASUS P5B Dlx WiFi, Samsung HD401LJ (a while ago I had 3 HDDs installed, 1 x Samsung HD401LJ, 2 x Samsung SP2504C), ASUS 7900GT (OCed to 540 / 1550), XFi, 2 Nexus 120mm fans, 1 DVD-RW; the system you plan will work without any problems with the PSU you have (keep in mind that just adding the power consumption of your components and checking if it's lower than the power supply rating doesn't necessarly mean that it will work; the way the PSU rails are loaded also matters; for example if you have a 300W with a single 12V line of 12A and you want to add a 8800GTX to your system you might have an issue, althrough the 130W that the 8800GTX consumes would fit in the 300W that you have)
