I have a Nexus power supply that I purchased because of the SilentPCReview recommendation. I am not that happy with it. It is not quieter than my modded Enermax (removed the outer fan, loosened thermistor, taped vents) The main problem is that the power cables are barely long enough (I have to stretch them tight) to fit into a couple of hard drives that I have mounted in the bottom cage of my LianLi case. I will probably be removing it today and putting the Enermax back in.

display error in the poll results

Post by NeilBlanchard » Wed Apr 16, 2003 12:19 pm

Hello:

At the moment, I'm seeing two Fortron 120mm entries in the poll results (above) and no modded listing. Somethin' go wonky? :P

Also, would it be possible to add a positive/negative rating for each PS? Maybe a green portion on the bar for positive and red for negative? That would make a "one glance" understanding possible. IE if all or most of the bar is green, then the PS is rated as satisfactory and if all/most of it was red, then we know that even though someone owns the thing, it still stinks!

I was using a dual fan 420 watt thermaltake silent purepower. It was fine for me until I replaced my cheapo cpu heatsink/fan.

Now I can finally hear the power supply and I realize that I could use a quieter one. So eventually I'll probably get a SilenX 18 or 14 400 watt psu (depending on how worried I get about heat).

No hurry though, since I've successfully removed all the annoying noises (high pitch and/or intermittent whines) already.

  • Seasonic 400W. Solid like rock. Quiet like mouse. This PSU would get annoying if I used it's capacity though. Currently it's at it's permanent speed of 1406rpm. I might have heard it rev up once. At this low speed my Sony monitor and the freezer are what's pesking me now.
  • suspended Cuda IV/40. What hard drive?
  • XP1700Tbred under Arqua6128/Fuzzbox/Panaflo@7v. Runs at 44°C :)
  • Nforce 220 on mobo, passive

Well, let's put it this way: it is the quietest 2-fan line, and it does have a couple of friendly features (like the low voltage fan only output) for no mess, no fuss noise-reduced computing. For lots of folks it seems quiet enough. The word used was quiet and its a poll.

There is a bug in the poll chart.

There is two Fortron 120mm PSU, one of which should be modded PSU.

Or is it only me that see this bug?

lol, yes but so was the modded PSU that was there before. It may screw up the pole a little when they vote. :D

As of midday (Pacific) on April 18, the Modded & 120mm Fortron options ended up getting reset due to a problem in the database. Sorry about that; please come back and cast your votes for those if either was your choice before.

I have a nameless noisy thing for now, but I'm intending to buy either a Silenx or a fanless PSU.

I am running a ChiefTech 360W psu (came standard with my chieftech-dragon case (antec if I understand it correctly sell the same cases)) it is quiet enough that I won't think about it until my WD-80GB hdd and NorthBridge fan are quiet.

Okay, well, I screwed up. I click faster than I think sometimes. I clicked other, stock, which is wrong. It should be other, modded.

I'm running a Heroichi HEC-350LD-T that comes with an 80mm exhaust and a 92mm underside intake. Cheap on Newegg. I've disabled the 92mm. One of these days I have to actually take it out of there, but I want to give it some time to see if it able to survive without. Eventually I am going to go for a Silenx. Just have to save some money to treat myself!

i am planning on replacing the fan in my true power 380s (came with my sonata) with a panaflo l1a. stock, the psu is moderately too loud, so we'll see what happens when newegg gets these fans back in stock.

A little tip: you'll be safer with Panaflo M (not L). It will be about the same noise level, but able to cool much better when necessary.

EDIT: Check this thread -- http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=3062

point taken on the safety aspect. but would i have any problems putting an L into the psu? it makes sense that an M at 5v is about the same as an L at 7v; however, an L at 5v would be even better. :D like everyone else here, i'm on a quest for the quietest possible.

yes, but the difference in noise level is VERY small (having done it, I know). However, the L is quieter, just barely most of the time, and more seriously when your system is hot. Persoanlly i don'tmind a bit more noise if I know I am cranking the PC; I would rather have a bit cooler & safer under such circumstances now. Totally your choice.

Not to say what I do is any better than anyone else...

I use the Panaflo Ms (when I can get them) in thermistor-controlled PSUs like Seasonics because I know they don't jump the fan speed up unless under load. That means I pay almost no noise price for the extra airflow potential of the Panaflo M -- even tho it is available if/when the system is stressed.

I use the Panaflo L on the CPU HS because it is quieter than than the M. 12V on any Panaflo is too noisy for me; I will never use that unless i absolutely have to. Using a powerful CPU HS, I can usually get away with running Panaflo Ls at 7V or less, which means they are inaudible inside a decent case.

The difference between the CPU and PSU fans is simple -- the CPU fan is usually set on manual, the PSU I prefer controlled by the internal thermal control. There just a better chance of the PSU lasting longer than when I hack / undervolt its fan myself. I killed 2~3 PSUs with low airflow in the last 2 years, so...

The combo makes sense to me.

OK, now that I have changed out my stock, not real noisy PSU which became the loudest thing after changing the HDD and CPU, how do I note that I am using a 120mm Fortron?
Considering the price the 120mm Fortron is very nice :!:

Verax = Fortron ...... but my particular model wasn't listed
so I clicked "other".

1 Seasonic 400W or 350W PSU fan modded with panaflo.
1 Zalman 350W PSU - with coil whine.
1 Antec TP 380W PSU with fan mod.
1 Antec TP 550W PSU with fan mod.

With fans swapped they sound about all same.
Seasonic runs cooler than the other 3 usually though.
Best rail goes to 550W TP of course.
If your case airflow isn't best, I would go with seasonic. Antec love to heat itself up with sucking heat from CPU in case with not a good venting.
