I [didn't] damage my new Seasonic

Post by williamn6133 » Mon Jan 07, 2008 6:16 pm

At least it appears I did.

Seasonic 330w "silent" series (which is not silent, by the way).

Anyway I opened it up to have a peek inside. Found out the fan was connected with a 2 pin plug. Removed the grill to assist airflow, and screwed it back together.

Now when I fitted the PSU into my PC and turned it on, 2 things failed to happen. 1) My monitor didn't spring into life as normal and 2) my optical mouse didn't light up.

Everything else started. Fans, motherboard light, hard disks etc.
I have since replaced it with my slightly older modded Hiper PSU and my PC works fine. (Apart from the mouse - I had to change the usb port which is was connected to.) I am at a loss as to what the problem could be. :?
Maybe there is no problem and I just forgot something stupid. What do you think?

Welcome to SPCR William,

I dunno, it sounds like the main ATX (20 or 24 pin?) plug might not have be making contact on all the pins? Had you "tested" the PSU with a wire jammed in the green wire contact? You plugged in the 4-pin power plug?

Thank you sir.

The PSU started up. The fan was spinning. As were all my other fans. As was the motherboard light (working). I will probably give it a try in a couple of months if the Hiper gives me problems. (I hate dismantling my PC to be honest).

I have had the symptoms you mention from 3 causes. Exactly what Neal said were the first two. Big 20/24 pin connector not completely in tight, and same results when I forgot the 4 pin square power connector.

Of course, the third one is that I bought a case with really cheap power supply, and the PSU was DOA.

Thank you sir!

Happy to say it was nothing serious.

However I have done a fan swap on my Seasonic. Works fine. Except: the new fan fails to start without help.

Can you recommend a very quiet fan for my 330W silent series PSU?

Hi William,

I would suggest the 1200RPM Scythe Slipstream model.

Thanks Neil.

Won't I need something with a higher ampage? The pre-fitted fan in my Seasonic was rated at 0.33A - unusually high. Which is why I beleive the scythe 0.13A replacement is having trouble starting.
