PSU, MOBO, and CPU air cooler for my final x79 audio bulid?
Hi guys,
Almost done with my build here, here we go:
Chasis:
http://www.lian-li.com/v2/en/product/pr ... s_index=69
CPU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819116492
Motherboard
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6813131800
VS
http://i4memory.com/f90/gigabyte-x79-ud ... tos-33253/
CPU Cooler:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835608018
or
http://www.amazon.com/Thermal-right-arc ... B004D1VULU
or
http://www.amazon.com/THERMALRIGHT-SILV ... 072&sr=1-1
PSU that is fairly silent?? Anything cheaper that will go good with this system??:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6817151102
Memory x2:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820231478
SSD Drive x2
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 20148442[b]
Hard Drive:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 1TB%20SATA
Insulation Foam, best on the market:

Right now Im trying to decide on the motherboards. Gygabyte vs Asus, GA ud5 has more SATA 3 ports than the ASUS pro.
Not sure which is better for OCiing, I'll only be OC'ing to around 4.3gz.
PSU, is 660watts enough if I'm OC'ing to around 4.3gz? I'll be getting a ONE GPU in a year from now to run new generation games decently.
Let me know your thoughts!
Anthony

What kind of GPU? Something like the GTX 580? Or more like the R6950?markgerazzi wrote: Right now Im trying to decide on the motherboards. Gygabyte vs Asus, GA ud5 has more SATA 3 ports than the ASUS pro.

I think 660 W is more than enough.

Probably yeah a 580, but i will be ocing, so wont i be using like 300 watts all together, i heard its good ot have lots of headroom so it's more silent and there's less pull.

I'll be the naysayer - are you sure you want to build something for work that is based on a mobo/chipset that is just out? BIOS revisions are being produced at a rapid pace, at the moment.

what could need to be revised?
and is the 3930k c2 stepping still?

Take the Lancool PC-K9 Lan cool is made by Lian Li, the major difference between them is that Lancool cases have a steel body which is sturdier and less susceptible to vibration. It has the same internal build, only one more front fan option. The fans are the same as in the Lian Li cases: the 140mm fans are good, the 120mm fans are only good at 5V, but don't move a lot of air.

Do you know the system will work with other audio workstation components, and work well?
If you use the system professionally, you can't do to much research on your tools.
Find something you KNOW works, instead of the latest greatest. Just my 0.02$.

Every single CPU/chipset, ever, isn't ready for prime time when released. There are always significant BIOS revisions in the first 90 days. Worst case, there is a chip redesign (ala Sandy Bridge and SATA). Another example - Sandy Bridge failed horribly with DAW builders when first released and is still suffering from the stigma. (It's just been in the last ~3 months that the problem was diagnosed and somewhat resolved: Intel went from native PCI in older designs to a PCI-PCIe bridge in SNB. People with PCI audio cards had bandwidth issues.) Finally, as pointed out: who knows when your DAW card will support drivers for this set up?markgerazzi wrote:what could need to be revised?
For grins, take a look at the ASUS P8P67 Pro. A well respected mfgr and card. If you chart the BIOS releases over time you get this:
First revision 0 Cumulative days after first release
2nd 7
3rd 29
4th 62
5th 79
6th 174
7th 280
My rule of thumb is to wait 3 months before building with a new platform. Let others fall on their swords/find the bugs.

So it wasn't until the bloomfield or 2600k that DAWS benefited from SB?
Aren't the revisions going to be made with updates? Or are you talking new parts?

Also this line up isn't THAT new, it's still sandy bridge and enthusiast.
Re: PSU, MOBO, and CPU air cooler for my final x79 audio bul
While the cpu cores are SNB cores, it's a new chip with a new memory controller, etc...and a new mobo to support it. Call me conservative. I just don't like being the beta tester, especially when my work depends on it. YMMV.
I would advise, before you take the plunge, check in with your DAW card mfgr and make sure they support the new platform.

My workstation feeds on ram, the quad channel memory is a big step in film composition, users can utilize over 100GBs of ram if their hardware allows it, as you already probably know in 64x DAW.
No official x79 news from steinberg, I may regret jumping the gun, but if I wait for mild possibly unoticable revisions, I might as well wait for IV-E or Haswel
