Hard to say; I had four 6Y060L0 to sample from at one time and found that they vary very little. I only have two 6Y200M0 to sample but they are also extremely close; I'd wager they're impossible to differentiate with a blind A/B test from each other. I don't know anything about the 6x300x0 drives.

EDIT: But they are most likely 3 platter drives w/6 heads.

Sounds like something we have come across before. Supposdely similar products that have different noise characteristics. If the 200Gb models are OK then that is not too bad.

I think I would prefer to get just one drive, but I'll hang on a little longer now that the 7200.8s are actually being shipped. There has been some positive feedback on them to date, but not enough "reliable" feedback for me to purchaes one yet.

I have a 200gb Maxtor Plus10 in my media box. At first I was very disapointed with the noise, seeks sounded really crunchy. Turning the AAM setting to it's lowest solved this, it's just about audible now but not intrusive.
It does hum though, more so than my seagate 7200.7's though they seek louder. It's the loudest component in my box but it's a small box. If you had it in a larger thick steel case with some dampening material you would probabally only hear it if you listened for it

There's a review of the DiamondMax Plus 10 at MaximumPC. There is no DiamondMax "Plus" 10 on Maxtor website. Correct me if I'm wrong but the "Plus" means that the drive have 16MB cache and not 8MB. All DiamondMax 10 larger than 200GB have 16MB cache.

I just picked this drive up for 150 bucks. considering the price, its a very good buy. I guess i got lucky cuz the drive i received has no idle nooise whut soever. However, the seeks are a bit loud but i can't really hear them with my case cover on.

Compusa has the SATA 250gb Maxtor DM10 drive on sale for 150 bucks. Thats a great deal if u ask me.

Have you tryed turning the AAM setting down? This nearly got rid of seek noises completely on my maxtor10

What about if this drive is supended?

I'm thinking of moving to from a Samsung 160gb to a 300gb maxtor because i need more space and I would like a faster drive.... is this stupidity in terms of the noise levels?

There's not much of a difference according to Storagereview, in their review of the MaxLine III they say:
"Maxtor has also recently announced the DiamondMax 10 series. The higher capacity DM10 units (250 GB and 300 GB) feature construction similar to the MaXLine III right down to the 16 MB buffer. As a result, these high-end DM10 drives are functionally identical to the MaXLine III. Maxtor claims that the MaXLine uses select premium components and premium testing and manufacturing. In the end, however, the performance figures that follow also apply to the 300 GB DiamondMax 10. "

I just got six 6B300S0's (Maxtor 300G Diamond Max 10 SATA 150) and am very impressed with the low noise levels. Quieter then the older MaxLine II 300G and in line with older Seagate’s.

I'm testing them with Spinrite now, so I can't elaborate much more.

One surprising thing though - these drives are labeled to use 740mA @ 5V and 1520mA at 12V (22 watts total)- much higher than the MaxLine II 300G at 11 watts. I'll measure the actual current draw later.

Those current figures got me worried that heat's gonna to be a problem - I've measured the drive case at 42.8C with a non-contact probe on a drive that's been running Spinrite continuously for 6+ hours in free air. Things may get worse in a case.

I chickened out and went and bought 2 160Gb 8Mb PATA Nidec Samsung Spinpoints. They are both great drives, totally inaudible when inside my enclosures in my case.

When I did use them stacked directly on top of one another there was a lot of whine coming from one drive. If I separated the drives they were quiet. Seems there is whine coming out of the bottom of one of the drives that is reflected by a hard surface if you allow it.

Maybe next time I will risk a Maxtor :)

Needless to say (but I'll say it anyway) I'm not sure if it affects other RAID BIOS or non RAID situations (although I would assume not).
DM Plus 10 runs fine with the NForce 3 250Gb RAID BIOS in my system.
