Samsung v80 or p80?
Big difference in noise level? I'm not chasing high performance, but why buy a slower one of there is virtually no difference?

There is some difference:SR linkossar wrote:Big difference in noise level? I'm not chasing high performance, but why buy a slower one of there is virtually no difference?
It's really depends on the kind of use you are going to be putting the drive into. For your main system drive I recommend going with the P-series, but the V-series makes an excellent backup, mp3 storage, etc. drive.
The V is a bit quieter and runs cooler so I'd expect it to be better for htpc use for example.

going purely by the physics of it, V80 will have a worse rotational latency than P80. regardless of other disk features that improve performance (bigger cache, better firmware, better head assembly, more rigid and vibration-immune case), the P80 spins 25% faster. i would expect 10% or so faster access to small widely spread out chunks of data. for larger data accesses, which are dominated by the data transfer time, the difference will be less noticeable.Pjotor wrote:Of the ones I've seen, the P80 series rotate at 7,200 rpm and the V80's at 5,400 rpm. I have no idea how it affects I/O performance, though.
