Which Quiet External Hard Drive?

Post by David Cole » Tue Jan 10, 2006 10:43 am

Some time ago I asked here if anyone could recommend a quiet external hard drive. I go no responses. So I offer my own advice now having looked at a few external drives. A Maxtor One Touch was pretty quiet but crashed quite soon after purchase, a firewire Iomega 200Gb worked ok but was very noisy, a 250Gb Seagate is reliable but has a hum which takes a bit of taming and it gurgles a bit. So far, the best drive I have found for quietness is the Western Digital Essential 320Gb. Too early to comment on reliability but it just whispers. Very satisfactory.
