Why Samsung not make the 1 platter - 125gb hdd?

Post by Xman » Tue Mar 07, 2006 5:13 pm

Samsung 250 gb have two platters, each 125 gb.. Two platters- more noise, more heads - more noise..

Many users use only 50-100gb hdd space and backup all data on DVDs, USB HDD Storage box etc.

One platter -125 gb - very low noise, lower heat, have less heads etc HDD - hit of sales!

Yes and lower price for RAID0 config!

Why Samsung not make this drive I not understand!

Stupid engenners&marketing of samsung team....... :(

The lack of a single-platter P120 has nothing to do with engineering and everything to do with marketing.

A market for a new 125 GB drive these days would be excrutiangly small - likely too small to offset the costs of starting a production line. It's not just Samsung - noone sells drives this "small" anymore.

If you want small and quiet, either go for a used drive (single-platter 80 GB P80 should be plenty quiet, or if not Ralf Hutter here has some Barraduda IVs 80 GB for sale), or a laptop drive.

P80 80 Gb more slower than P120 with 125 gb platter!

120 gb not small size , enough for most users!

If drive fast and quiet millions people who want quiet drive on the world buy this drive!

more than 120 gb not need , buy 300-400 gb drive and place in USB2.0 box for large files movies etc or in Power Management disable this drive 20-30min inactivity

If 120gb really is enough just buy a 2.5" notebook drive. Those are more quiet then a one platter P120 could ever be.

Just marginally. It is very unlikely you will actually see a difference in real life.

Also, it has been noted that the P120 is actually slightly louder than the P80.

Perhaps, unless they get into video/movies, which seems to be rather popular today. However, as I said before, there are no new 3.5" drives on the market right now smaller than 160 GB, and most are between 200 and 300 GB. Samsung would not be able to competitively price a single-platter P120 due to production methods, and very few people will buy a 120 GB drive when they can get 200 GB for the same price.

Simple "bigger is better" mentality at work here.

I think you are overestimating here. The number of people who have computers sufficiently quiet that they'll hear a difference between this Samsung and any other hard drive on the market today is maybe in low tens of thousands. The number of people who would be able to tell the difference between a theoretical single-platter P120 and a double-platter P120 in their computer is maybe in hundreds.

Most people will not pay for two drives if they can pay less for one of the same capacity. Due to this, it does not make economic sense for Samsung to make a single-platter P120. Since they are a for-profit corporation, chances are they will not make such a drive.

There was a single platter 120GB drive mentioned in a Samsung product PDF and there's a product specification at Samsungs polish site.
