Raptor drives drive me crazy

Post by Zergling » Tue Aug 05, 2003 9:30 pm

I have a very very noisy overclocked system, but I can't stand those high pitched whines from the Raptor dual.

I tried to find stuff like smartdrive or quietdrive, but they cost way too much, $50 for a drive enclosure?

Suspension sounds like a good idea to me, anybody has experience on that? I only need to get rid of high pitched noise.

Yes, from a technical point of view I would agree that the latter option would work :P

Have you attempted to move them from the 3.5" tray and placing them on some foam at the bottom of the drive?

I also have 2 Raptor drives. I haven't even bothered to format them when I heard how much noise they make.
If anybody comes up with a good solution to silence these drives, I may actually reconsider using them.
BTW: Before I bought, I looked up the noise they make in the storagereview database and thought it was OK. What a mistake!

It's funny how people outside this arena have labeled them as "quiet".

It's weird.

I need a solution more permanent, I may move this pc from place to place, damn any deals out there for HDD enclosures? the storagereview.com review did mention that although the dBA number looked good, the actual noise was .....

I just checked out silent drive and smart drive again, directron has both of them for sale

Silent drive $34, not recommended for 7200rpm drives
Smart drive 2002, $59, not recommended for 10000rpm drives

   please

Sandwich, sidesink, and suspend.

Read Mike's article, and read the FAQ.

Making something that noisy quiet is going to take one of two things: Time, or money.

I found an interesting HDD cooler here
Image
only $10 each + shipping, an easy mod should make this a good muffler/cooler for Raptor, what do you guys think?

It's got 2 40mm fans.

You'd probably not hear the Raptor anymore, but you would instead hear the 4 fans screaming like banshees.

Those kind of URL tags can be shorted by using the BBCode convention:

[url=www.super-long-website-name.com]Drive Cooler[/url]

Keeps things cleaner and avoids making the post several screens wide. Also useful when linking to other threads in your posts to put the thread title in as the "short cut" name.
