Requesting recommendations: Blu-ray ROM drive for HTPC

Post by gadgetzilla » Tue Feb 05, 2008 3:10 pm

Rather than buying a standalone Blu-Ray disk player, I thought to install one in my HTPC.

Are there any recommendations which can be used with Vista or Windows MCE. I haven't decided what OS to load yet.

In addition, what software can used to watch BluRay discs? In the past, on XP, I've used PowerDVD with my current PC for standard DVDs.

With the standalone units there are concerns about BD-profiles 1.0, 1.1 or can it be upgraded to 2.0 (BD Live), is there similar concerns with the internal units as well for the PC's?

Thank you

The best HD players for PCs are the LG GGC-H20L and GGC-H10N. The 20L reads HD DVD and Blu-Ray and burns DVDs, and the H10N can burn Blu-Ray as well iirc. The H20L can be had for $300 and the H10N for around $1000 where it's in stock. The H20L is a very good deal, as Blu-Ray only players [not burners] often run $250 by themselves. I have one in my HTPC, and it works very well.

edit: minor error of grammars

FRY had LG GGC-H20L several times on sale for $250. OP is from CA, so it might be worth checking out.

How long do we have to wait for these things to reach $100?

I am not experienced with Blu-Ray, however I thought that Vista and an HDMI connected display were required. Can AnyDVD HD be used with Windows XP and a DVI connection to play Blu-Ray at full resolution?
