WD 3200AAKS which are single-platter?

Post by Morten74 » Tue Nov 16, 2010 2:42 am

Hi Guys

I recently bought a WD 3200AAKS and was of course wondering if it was a single or dual platter version. I checked the posts/reviews here, but my drive's revision is not the same as any of the ones described here. Can I find an overview of "Revisions - # of platters" anywhere, or should I just assume that it is single platter as it is a new drive and not a drive from the "transistion period"?

Any other suggestions on how I can find out?

Thanks in advance

Best regards

Unless you found some really old inventory, it'll be single platter.

Okay, I should be fine then - production date is August 29, 2010 (in Thailand).

So let's see if it's quiet...

yertech has a blog in which he lists all the hard drive models by family with the number of platters. He's moved to a new site, but don't know if it's been updated with the latest models.

HDD Platter Database - Western Digital - 2.5"

Another thing you can do is to get a digital scale that's accurate to the gram or maybe run down to the post office and weight your drives there. Compare that weight to a know drive with 1-platter. Or check specs. A 1-platter 2.5" HD should be around 94g while a 2-platter 2.5" HD should be about 100g.

SleepyBum, the WD 3200aaks is a 3.5" drive.

Here's the current product page from WD. Note the 160GB is no longer sold. Also, the 320GB and 500GB single platter tech has been on the market for a while. Add the late Aug 2010 production date, and it sort of leads to the answer. :D

Oopppss... You are right... For some reason I thought he was talking about 2.5" laptop HDs, because they have just recently made the transition to 320GB platters.

Yes, a 320GB desktop HD is probably based on 320GB or 500GB platters. 6667GB platters have recently just came out, but they're probably only being used for those 3TB green drives for now.

Anyways, here's the list of WD 3.5" HDs, maybe his model will be listed.

HDD Platter Database - Western Digital - 3.5"

Also, the digital scale method still works... 1-platter 3.5" drives should be about 480g.
