Any complaints about the Samsung Spinpoint 1604N 1614N HDDs?

Any long term users of the Samsung 160 GB Spinpoint HDDs have any significant complaints about their performance / reliability / noise levels?

Also, do you think their price will drop significantly over time?

Been using a 1604N for over 6 mos. No complaints whatsoever, love the small dif between idle & seek, performance is as fast in actual use as the very fast IBMs, not really possible to see/feel any difference; they're close enough. Much faster than the Barracuda IVs, though again, in actual use the differences are not that significant, IMO.

Price -- it's always market driven. It doesn't seem high anyway, just average for the capacity, no?

No complaints here either, been using the new 1614C SATA-model for a bit under a month now and all is well. It's actually running at 33C under small load/idle.

I don't qualify as a long-term user, having only had mine for about a week, but I must say that this is by far the quietest hard drive I've ever worked with.

I'm with MikeC on the 1604, I've also had one for about six months and love it. Runs quiet and cool with a 3 year warranty.

I also have a 2-3 month old 1614N that I love. It's faster than a Barracuda IV, as quiet and runs cooler. Can't beat that.

Price-wise, they're right in there with other (noisier) drives of their size and type. I would suspect that their prices would follow the rest of the market.

I have 3 SP1604N 160gig 2mb cache drives in my system which are now about 7 months old.

For the last month Ive been having intermittent problems with one of the drives, which is my file share drive. Sometimes I get Windows disk write cache errors, sometimes system freezes, and then on reboot when it shows up0 in hdd detection, the srive appears as Samsung Spinpoint spn1604n instead of SP1604N like the others...and doesnt show in my computer.

Its an infrequent intermittent problem at the moment so I cant RMA it. Im out of space regardless so am getting myself a pair of Seagates now to spread the risk.

I'm debating between a 160 GB Seagate 7200.7 and a 160 GB Samsung Spinpoint.

Do you think noise levels and performance and reliability will be about the same?

Noise levels - Samsung by far.

Performance - Probably a toss-up.

Reliability - The earlier Seagates have a good reputation, the 7200.7 is fairly new so it doesn't have much of a track record. Samsungs haven't been too well distributed in the past so there's not a lot of their drives out there, or much experience with their warranty process either. It's kind of an unknown.
