Tomorrow I plan to get the emachine AMD 64 deal that's going on at Best Buy. I'm thinking of ordering a 7200 RPM drive to replace the 4200 RPM drive that comes with the laptop. Toshiba makes the MK5024GAY and Hitachi makes the TRAVELSTAR 7K60.
Which would be quieter? The Toshiba or Hitachi drives? I'm only aware of these two companies making 7200 rpm drives for notebook computers.
7200 RPM laptop drive...

You've named the only 2 I know of as well, and the Toshiba is fairly recent.
I upgraded from a 4200 to the Hitachi 7k60. I can feel the laptop vibrating and I can hear a low hum now. The only increase in noise is due to that vibration. There was no difference in idle noise for me.
If it's speed you're after, upgrade your RAM first. I went from 256 to 768mb and saw a dramatic increase in speed (XP Pro). The machine just flew. This was when I still had the 4200. Upgrading to the 7200 was no big deal, but I use this thing for development work so I need high performance.
Temperature runs about the same as the old hard drive: around 41C idle, and 51C when I'm particularly active.
