Decent quiet dvd rom, that's ROM, drives

Post by meglamaniac » Fri Dec 03, 2004 12:43 am

I've trawled through the search on this but nearly 100% of what comes up seems to relate to either CDRW/DVDROM combo drives or DVD recorders.

I'm trying to pin down a decent, quiet DVD-ROM for my upcomming machine. I've already got some good recommendations for the dual layer DVD recorder I want from other threads, but I always like to have a reader and a writer in the machines I build. Call me old fashioned :D

I'm not bothered about noise levels outside of 1x movie playback - it can whine away all it likes during games so far as I'm concerned as my speakers will more than drown it out!
So, are there any particular recommendations?
We should really come up with a "recommended" list at some point, would save trouble...!

You know there is a search feature here, don't You? As a hint, try searching for "AOpen".

Cheers,

Jan

Stay away from the LG GDR-8160B DVD-ROM. They are so unstable (that is vibrating) when playing CD-ROMs that you not only get deaf, but it gives all kinds of errors. I retired mine.

Jan, I hope this was an honest mistake. Or are you trying for the "I'm obnoxious award"?

This is a recollection of something I read here, not first hand experience, but aren't the Asus drives with "Quiet Drive" supposed to be very good? I've an idea they've got a DVD-ROM drive with that technology.

I'm really sorry for blaming You about not using the search.
Please accept my sincere apologies.

Anyway, as Halcyon already linked, based on the c't test the AOpen drive is the most quiet drive under DVD playback. This is the exact post with the test results.

Cheers,

Jan

Heh, apology accepted, we all make mistakes.
Someone else mentioned Asus have some sort of "quiet drive" technology too but I'm having trouble tracking down any meaningful (by SPCR standards) data on it. I'll let you know if anything pops up.

I have a Hitachi/LG 8161B, have had it for more than a year, and I find it's a good drive. Loud, not the smoothest, but works great and it's pretty quick too.

Keeping up to date here

Thanks for the back links. Re: using the search function, that's fine and good, but the threads linked above are almost 3 years old, and as we all know, technology changes - or manufacturing processes change. So what's good 3 years ago may not be good any more, so I appreciate periodically trawling for new info and updates.

Thanks.

I was actually quite impressed by TSST SD-M1912. It's seek noise is very strangely pitched, but fairly quiet, and spin noise was very very good.
