dtemp problem?
Hey all,
I've looked around and didn't see any info on this so I thought I'd ask--I recently started on the silencing hobby, and downloaded dtemp to keep track of my HDD temps. My problem is that dtemp says "Error reading device id info". Has anyone else seen this? Do I need to turn the SMART monitoring "on" someplace?
I'm currently running Win XP SP1, gigabyte 7N400Pro v1 mobo, Athlon XP 3000+, 1 GB 400 Mhz RAM, GF6800GT, SB Audigy2, and 2 WD HDDs, both Caviar SE, one is 80 GB, one is 120.
*****Edit*****
I just tried using WD's diagnostic tools, and noticed that it did not pull SMART info for my drives--in fact it looked like it wasn't even seeing them. However, it was seeing the logical drives--my drives are each partioned into 2 parts, so I can keep better track of files--does SMART not work if you have your drives partitioned into more that 1 partition on each physical drive perhaps?

Any help or ideas appreciated, thanks,

well this is vexing....
I did indeed find I had to enable the SMART monitoring on my mobo--which I did (it was under the advanced options--had to press ctrl+f1 to see them), then i eagerly tried dtemp again....only to find that I get the same errors--from WD's website they appear to have the capability.
Any other guesses as to what may be causing the problem?

submitted the question to WD, so if I'm lucky they'll have an answer....

D'OH!!! well that's not helpful--03 is when I bought the 80, so I guess that would make sense. But shouldn't I still get some info off the 120? I just bought that a couple months ago off newegg, so I'm reasonably sure it would have the monitoring on it....
Perhaps the better question would be: Is there a list of the drives that do have temp monitoring someplace?
Thanks for the help so far.

Another possibility is that you are using a PATA RAID controller (obviously without the RAID functionality), or the drives are SATA, and are connected to a 3rd party controller.
SMART is not supported on 3rd party controllers, except in following cases:
1. SATA connectors in Intel ICH5 and up
2. SATA connectors in nForce3 and up
(both these are native solutions = need no drivers to install Windows, e.g. SATA controller in VIA VT8237 needs drivers, thus no SMART info)
3. Some Promise PATA66/100 non-RAID cards (perhaps even PATA133 if there is one)
4. I have no experience with SCSI, but MBM seems to support... obviously no RAID setups though.
This list means that the SMART information is accessible by DTemp, MBM etc. The controllers might ship with own software which is capable of reading SMART information, but normally these softwares just show "OK" and no detailed information.
Cheers,
Jan

Sorry for the late reply, but have you tested them in the same connector (=one at a time)? Or, if both at the same time, interchanged the connectors?JanW wrote:On my Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe (NForce2) boards, I can read SMART info with hddtemp under Linux from the SP1614C (C=SATA), but not from a 7000.7 SATA (says no SMART info available). Both are connected to the on-board controller (Sil3112), and I don't use the BIOS software-raid.

Ah, that explains it. I have a Soltek SL-K8TPro-939 motherboard with two SP1614C drives connected to a VIA VT8237 and don't have any SMART information (e.g., hddtemp doesn't work).Jan Kivar wrote:SMART is not supported on 3rd party controllers, except in following cases:

I'll see if I have better luck with the Promise PDC20579 controller.
Well, I have them in different systems, both with the same M/B. I'll try to swap the connector of the Seagate, or put it into the second system when I get a chance. Hi, I read Rtsai's "K8T800 Promise PDC20579 SATA controller problems" post which directed me to this one.
I'm using the same SP1614Cs (2 of them) connected to the VIA 8237 SATA controller on my SK8V M/B and I have no problems getting DTemp to read the SMART information, including the temps.
My DTemp version is 1.00 build 34 (RC8) and I'm using Windows XP, SP2 if that info is of any help.
