what would be the 250Gb Sata HDD better buy? Samsung Spinpoint or Maxtor DiamondMax 10

And will the 16Mb buffer on the Maxtor DiamondMax 10 provide much benefit over the 8Mb with the Samsung Spinpoint?

Comparing the 160GB models I prefer the DiamondMax. Very little noise and idle vibration with the DiamondMax

Have you tried the Samsung SP1614C 160Gb Sata HDD? I have this HDD and love it, its very very quiet but i havent experienced the DiamondMax at all, hence the reason for this post!

Anyone else?

Maybe I got an off unit but the Samsung Nidec I tried had a strong vibration that produced a hum. So Samsung is off my list.

I'm pretty sure you'll like the DM10 but I'll also add that I run all of my HDs in a SmartDrive enclosure with rubber feet at the bottom of my case.

No idea on the 16mb buffer. My guess is that its nice but not that big of a deal.

Ideally, i'd like to see a comparo between the Spinpoint and DiamondMax with either the 160Gb or 250Gb drives, or even larger.

That's going to be tricky considering that the spinpoints only go up to 160gb.

You probably haven't gotten much input from more senior forum members because this topic has been covered ad nauseum. Use the Search tool, or at least scan the first page of this subfurom...there's already 3 or 4 active topics about these drives.

are you comparing the new DM10 to the DM9 as not being good? or not being good enough?

Any further news if the larger Spinpoints are available in stores?

Im not sure if I mentioned this b4, but did I ever say that these drives are VERY fast too ... (DM10)

never owned a samsung, but tests confirm dm10 is the fastest sata drive to date.....and a fractionally noisier on paper, bun in real life ?

who knows ? who cares ?

if u want size and speed, get dm10

if u dont, still get a dm10 ....

best drive ive ever tried, not sure if i ever mentioned this b4

Thats on paper! Maybe the new ones won't vibrate like the one I had but if they do I say thats trashy.

I had all three; a DM9, DM10, and Spinpoint in the 160G SATA version sitting side by side. I also took turns putting them in a SmartDrive. If the Samsung didn't have such a strong vibration it would have been nice but the darn thing produced a hum it vibrated so much. I could have put it on foam or something but the DM10 was just that much nicer.

I have both the 1614C NIDEC and the DM10 300gb. Get the Maxtor, no question about it. Just as quiet and VERY fast. Maxtor idles a bit quieter but has slightly more audible seeks.

Thanks James22, were you able to conduct tests on both units for comparison?

How is the heat factor on the DM10? Cause i read that it can be a problem compared to the Samsung.

I noticed alot of ppl say the DM10 is very fast but Newegg shows the seek times slower than the Seagate 7200.8 300Gb drive.

any other thoughts

We really need SPCR to get a hold of some of these drives.

The seagates don't have AAM so you'll have to like loud seeks?

I think heat is going to depend more on how you mount the drive and airflow. It seems to me that almost all of the current 7200 drives run roughly (very roughly) about the same temp but even if the samsung ran 10 degrees cooler is that really the top priority?

My 160G DM10 is reading 98 F inside a SmartDrive. Just about the same temp (maybe less) as the 120G Seagate cuda V I used to have in it. I may add an undervolted Zalman 92mm fan to the mix but at the moment is doesn't seem necessary.

I also have a DM9 running in my downstairs computer using the comp usa version of the disktwin with an undervolted Zalman 92mm fan blowing over the heatsinks. Temps are roughly between 85 and 95 depending on activity.

I am so not an expert, but I have the diamondmax 10 if it's the 300gb SATA version. Says "whisper quite motor" on the box.

I also have the nidec spinpoint 160 gb sata versions.

The samsungs are quieter in my opinion and it's noticeable. I found the idle noise of the maxtor 300gb sata to be noisier, but the seeks were not at all (perhaps b/c of the idle noise was so loud?). With the samsung I can hear the seeks, but the idle noise of the drive is virtually nonexistent.

This is with AAM turned to the quietest setting.

Don't quote me on any of this though but I am sticking with dual samsung spinpoints. 320 gb in the last remnants of the sane part of my mind is more than enough. If it ain't, I shall learn how to delete stuff.

It would swing it for me, the Diamond Max +9 i've got could be used if my cooker hobs went on the blink. Its never caused any problems but inside a HTPC case (where my next hard driver is going (250Gig 120 Spinpoint hopefully)) it won't help the system tempreture any.
