Post by mg2plus » Tue Aug 09, 2005 3:17 pm

Hi!

Im trying to build a quiet system, but I am unable to get your recommended components because of availability here in Croatia. Here is a list of drives that are available, can someone tell me which one is most quiet?

HITACHI...160GB 8MB S-ATA150 HDS722516VLSA80 7200rpm
Seagate....160 GB 8MB S-ATA150 ST3160827AS NCQ, 7200 "Plus"
Seagate....200 GB 8MB S-ATA150 ST3200822AS (7200.7) 7200
Maxtor......200GB 8MB S-ATA150 6Y200M0 7200rpm
WD...........200GB 8MB S-ATA WD2000JD 7200rpm
WD...........160GB 8MB S-ATA WD1600JD 7200rpm

Unfortunately, I cant get samsung drives.

i have this drive and can vouch its not going to be the quietest on that list, HOWEVER, its FAST FAST FAST...

have yet to suspend it tho, but the seeks are very noticeable, im perfectly fine w/ them, not noisy, but noticeable

I would say either the latest Seagate or Maxtor, preferably Seagate.

Hitachi

They can run SATA I or SATA II (But not the one you mentioned, it is only SATA I), you can change seek performance between quiet, performance, Balance, or let the drive chose in real time

Downside (No jumper settings, you have to use the boot disk or boot CD)

Nice thing about it is everything can be changed ! but you have to boot the util. and change things to get it running the way you want...
