Notebook HDD performance losses?

Post by chirphappy » Fri Feb 17, 2006 11:49 am

I have a Samsung 2.5" hard drive model HM080II, and it is pretty darned quiet. However, I was wondering if I would feel any real world performance gains if I were to use a regular 3.5" hard drive, say a Seagate 7200.9 160GB, instead.

There's no doubt that a 7200RPM drive would give greater performance. I would think that no matter what tasks you use your computer for, you would notice a slight increase with a 7200RPM drive.

But how much "real-world" difference is depends on how you use your computer.

I use my computer mainly for browsing, word processing, and occasional games as Battlefield 2 and Warcraft III. There is probably no objective answer to this, but would it "feel" much faster to be using a 7200rpm drive? Or would the difference be negligible, thereby making the notebook drive a keeper given its sound qualities? I realize the answers will be more based on opinion than anything, but I'd like to hear what other people have to say about this anyways.

When I upgraded my laptop from a 5400RPM drive to a 7200RPM drive, I did notice a "slight" overall performance increase. It wasn't a huge difference.
