Hard drive / Power managment question

Post by Operandi » Sun Apr 09, 2006 8:28 am

I have three SATA hard drives in my system; my main drive a 160GB DiamondMax 10, and two 320GB Western Digitals that are used housing my music library and backup. I also have a 40GB Samsung Spinpoint in an external Firewire enclosure.

The problem is if I let Windows spin down my drives via power management the external Spinpoint disappears from my computer when the drive spins down; it also makes a strange "chirping" sound. The only way to get access to the drive again (and make it stop chirping) is to unplug it from the Firewire port and re-plug it in, annoying.

Is it possible to disable power management for a particular drive so I can have my three internal SATA drives spin down and leave my external Firewire drive up?

You could "request" a file that's in that HDD from time to time.
