Any Diff between Samsung Notebook Drives -- 40GB or 80GB?

Post by arrikhan » Sun Jan 14, 2007 8:09 pm

Looking to purchase the quietest drive for an HTPC in a living room.

Don't need size, ... just enough to boot up mythtv frontend really.

The recommendations around here seem to point to the 40GB notebook drive, but there appears to be quote a few released since then.

Does anyone know if there is much difference in heat/noise in the range of Samsung Notebook drives? ... or do I stick to the letter of the recommendation of an M40, otherwise known as MP0402H? (5400RPM & 40GB)

I'd rather jump to a P80 (7200RPM & 80GB) if it has the same specs as the 40G 5400RPM, or close. :D

You might find the 80 gb has 2 platters, so makes a fair bit more noise. With a good enclosure you can still work with it though. I have a 120 gb Samsung which is much louder than my 40 gb WD Scorpio, but still very good for what it is.

Are you sure that the 7200 rpm is a notebook drive? I think P80 is a desktop (3.5") drive...

I also read several reviews here recommending the 40 G 5400 rpm.
I couldn't find any locally but did see the same drive at 80 G 5400.

I bought the 80G Samsung and am very pleased with it.
I can't tell you the exact differences between the 40 and 80G though.

I'd stay away from 7200 rpm drives if I were you. They won't be as quiet as the 5400's or 4200's.

Take a look at the new Samsung T166 HD's. From my experience (I have 2 HD321KJ setup in RAID) and my case fans make more noise then those HD's. They're placed in a Antec SOLO case. I think that will give you a better bang for the buck (that's a correct expression ? :D).
