Samsung SH-S183 DVD-burner
Just thought I post a tip. I bought the S183 for it was the only SATA DVD-burner I could find.
Haven't really used it until last night.
IT´S QUIET!!!
The case was open so there was nothing between the dvd and my ear. I could hear it but barely. Nothing annoying sound.
I was burning DVDs at the moment. Not in maxed speed but generally (my experiance) the reader/burner speed up with a massive turbine WOOOSH and then slow down. It did spinn up but I almost had to concentrate to hear it.
Ambient noise was a bit loud (we where talking) tho.
But guessing on soundlvl based on SPCR review of Samsung Spinpoint P120 I would guess the burner reached 26-27dBA

Not even compered against other drives?mattcoz wrote:I have the same drive.
It is NOT quiet.
I did run some tests and I don't seem to maxed it but I still find it quiet, compereed to other optical drives.
The sound is a bit higher than my first post, say +30dBA but it's a nice wooosch sound.
Sorry about that folks. I still recommend it tho.

Summary: some Samsungs are excellent, some are lousy. There is one report of the same person buying two of the same drive (183A) and getting one loud, one quiet.

Then a noisy version should be a RMA business?Filias Cupio wrote:See also this recent forum thread:

I got my girlfriend the SH-183L and even after updating the firmware it wouldn't burn from iTunes. Every time I tried it would kill the disc and not start the actual progress bar. However, it burned fine from any other application. Can anyone else with the SH-183L try to confirm this for me, please?
Edit: Oh, and this drive was quiet for an optical. It certainly rose above the rest of the very quiet system, however it was a very even and low hum, rather than a buzz or rattle or grind.

sata and dvdrw drives = not this year
lots of compatibility problems and so limited in choices. I have have horrendous luck with samsung drives for the past 4 years. I will never buy a dvd drive or cd drive from them again. eventually, they are lawnmowers and then, they dont read disks. i hope yours is of a much higher quality, they are neat at first, didnt stay that way for me though.
