just some questions about quiet drives :p

Post by lollysticky » Sun Sep 09, 2007 3:43 am

first of all, hy! my first post here after reading these fora for some years :)

i want to quiet down my raptor a bit, especially the seek noice :)
i've got two options (in our local store):
1) AC Ryan XTOR Xilencer ATA/SATA
2) Scythe Quiet Drive SQD-1000
-> are there better options than this for a raptor or are there others (and better ones?)

i've read some good reviews on both, but i'm kinda troubled. The XTOR allmost costs double than the scythe one -> is the performance that good or are they just overpriced?

second, i need to buy a 500Gig Harddisk and i want a quiet one...
some advice plz :p

I just got the SHD1000.

dropped temp of my 500Gb Spinpoint at least 5C and it has quieted a silent drive even more. I'm happy with it for US$20.

hey

I've got one Quiet Drive from Scythe myself a few weeks ago, works like a charm.
With indirect fan of the PSU only, some 20 cm of, it cools better than the same drive in the same place in free air. Quite astonishing, but better even, the seek noises I had, which were minor, are muffled quite a bit.

I'm very happy with it.

For the 500GB drive, choose a new generation Samsung (F1?) or the new gen. Hitachi

you should fill out the location field in your profile, so people know how to advise you. the samsung drives are certainly available in europe and usa (and have been so since winter), so people would assume they should be available.

My Samsung is now 27 to 29 degrees. It was 31 to 33 degress C before Quiet drive. But Samsungs are cool drivers, unlike WD raptors.
