3.5" Housing for 2.5" HDDs
Does such a thing exist? Like I want to put my 2.5" HDD in a 3.5" rack. Just wondering if such a thing exists.
I actually wanted to buy a solution where the 2.5HDD sits on a PCI card so that way it draws power from the motherboard. But the product called Upgradeware HD25-IS isn't sold in Canada for some reason. I can't find any resellers would would sell me one

I don't think they are sold in Sweden yet. I did a search on prisjakt.se this week and it wasn't listed. If I where you I would contact Scythe Europe and ask where you can buy one.

I've been waiting a couple of weeks on an SQD2.5-1000 since ordering it from here for my wicked fast PATA drive HM160HC.
Had to call them up, apparently it was not in stock as listed on the website so they had to order it from the warehouse in Germany... Anyway they ordered a few extra also when I called so they're on the way. It's the only place I could find it on sale in Sweden, should receive the box next week!

It's not -in- Sweden, but it has a Swedish section, and they deliver to Sweden too:Atmosper wrote:Hey Fenix, do you know where to buy one of those. Preferrably in Sweden, of course.

HDDs (any size) vibrate in the plane of rotation. Not up and down, so the large top and bottom could radiate. So the acoustic radiating area (think of it as the loudspeaker cone) is really tiny on a 2.5" HDD. If you suspend it, the radiating area does not increase but now you need some cooling air becuz still air (alas) is a wonderful thermal insulator.Atmosper wrote:...there must be something wrong with you when you think a suspended 2.5" HDD can be a little quieter.
If you mount the 2.5" HDD in a 3.5" enclosure, now you have physical contact to carry the heat away - but it carries the vibration along with the heat. Now the "loudspeaker cone" is the much larger 3.5" enclosure.
Suspension = lower noise, more temperature rise, more DIY. You pays yer money and you takes yer choice.
suspenders + fan
yes that's the tradeoff but one can use a small fanlike the Nexus Frisbee to blow at the drive maybe that the optimal solution (instead of encasing inside 3.5) -

I keep my 2.5" system drive in a Scythe 2.5" quiet drive that's suspended in an Antec Solo. I have a Samsung 500 GB in a 3.5" quiet drive on foam.
It's so quiet it's uncanny!
Definitely not audible over anything in my apartment. The 2.5" quiet drive actually made a big difference! My wish for affordable SSD's suddenly vanished. Silence is bliss...
