Need advice on SATA optical drive

Post by ryboto » Wed Nov 21, 2007 6:03 pm

I'm curious what the recommendations are for quiet SATA optical drives. Of course I'm looking for an all-in-one dvd-burner. Currently I have an IDE NEC 3520(i think), and it's incredibly loud when reading dvd's. Nero Drive Speed doesn't work with the drive, so I can't adjust the read speed. So, i guess an additional question is whether or not there are any sata dvd burners that are adjustable with Nero drive speed.

thanks in advance,

CDFreaks.com has reviewed and recommends the Samsung SH-203b SATA drive. I think the drive would work with the Nero speed setting utility but you should probably post that question in the CDFreaks forum. Some SPCR forum members have praised Samsung optical drives for low noise.

Got the Samsung, nothing special. It's compact, fast and not loud after you get Nero DriveSpeed to adjust the speed, but it is not silent and not very quiet as-is. The MagicSpeed function is a load of bollocks: only applies to CDs apparently, and even then doesn't reduce the speed enough.

Probably the best you can get though, especially considering the price.

One lack is the fixed "spin standby"(the time the disc keeps spinning after use), can't turn it down from two minutes. Nothing major, but it's a little irritating.

I'd also recommend the Pioneer DVR-212D. It might not be the absolute quietest drive out there, but it performs very well. I can read DVDs at nearly full speed (I've ripped by collection of about 60 DVDs in the past 3 months) and I've never burned a coaster yet (*touch wood*).

Well, I just assumed reliability a given, considering recommendations here are for reliable products. With my NEC i've yet to have a bad disc, and I've burned hundreds. So, either the Samsung 203, or Pioneer 212?

aren't the pioneer 115 and 215 out already?

back to the point then, i've always used pioneer because of the superior burns(according to cdfreaks anyway) and good looking bezel. i reckon a few embossed logos look way better than the printed stuff.

the pioneer is 180mm long though, 10mm longer than the samsung. not a problem in most cases, but a big plus if you're using a small case like the my nsk3400- an extra 10mm increases the gap between the drive and psu by a whopping 40%!
