Opinion on the Cooldrive3
Has anybody use a cooldrive 2 or 3 from Cooler Masters? I'm thinking about buying one of these and run the fan at 5V or 7V. Better yet, not run the fan at all.

I have the cooldrive 2?...its not bad...too expensive at most places though...there have been some reviews of the cooldrive 3:

Essentially, it seems that these HDD coolers don't do all that much. If you do get one, you could leave the fan off and not really have to worry about it. One option that I am considering is replacing the stock coolermaster fan with a quiter 40mm sunon...but that will have to wait for another 2-3 months, when I transfer my system into a new, quieter case, etc... Well, hope this helped. Take care.
PS I think that directron.com is having a sale on these items

Then again, I came across this review, which concludes that use of the cooldrive3 can lower HDD temps by about 5 degrees celsius:

In any case, it is failry apparent that, if you plan on using the 40mm fan functionality, you should probably replace the stock fan with a quieter one (maybe even a fan controlled by a rheostat).

I bought the Cool Drive 2002 and it does not reduce the temps without a fan. It can be run passively and temps remains about the the same.
The sad thing it does not does not reduce the noise of the hard disk, it just changes the seek tone. It has a more 'echo-eeey' sound. The vibrations are transmitted to the cool drive itself. Also it is not side sinked to the cool drive, which could of helped its cooling performance.
I am going use the alumium shell to make a box and then suspend the hard disk inside with rubber. I will try to seal the box, maybe this will work.
The smart drive is a better choice if you can hold of it. I think it is $60 in the US.
