There are no risks involved is setting AAM on the HD501LJ with the Hitachi Feature Tool. I have used both the Hitachi Feature Tool and a later version of Hutil to silence my four HD501LJ drives. Either utility will work as expected.

Like Michael said, there are no issues with using the Hitachi Feature tool to enable AAM on your Samsung drives. I did it just last week on my two new HD501LJ's...worked like a charm.

To those that have enabled AAM on their HD501LJ's, how much of a performance impact have you seen (before vs. after you enabled AAM)?

...and how much silence you've gained?

I know that enabling AAM results in noise reduction. Just wondering how much of a noticeable performance impact results from turning on AAM...

I've gained great big gobs of silence. In fact, I've gained so much silence that I'm running out of space to store it.

Seriously, how much AAM helps depends on how loud the HD is before using it. My Samsung HD501LJ units are very quiet even without AAM so the noise difference is not great. I have not noticed a difference in performance with AAm enabled.
