Old Seagate 80 GB vs. new Samsung 500GB
For the past 3 years I have been using a Seagate 80GB (ST380215A) But I really need more space so I'm thinking of a new 500GB drive, especially the Samsung SpinPoint (HD501LJ)
So, how do they compare soundwise? I find my Seagate fairly silent.
Thanks.

Hi, I looked up your model number and its a 7200.10 (2MB cache) drive. Ever since the (now legendary) Barracuda IV & V drives Seagate's drives haven't been great for noise. I would expect you to find the Samsung at least as quiet and probably quieter; I'd also expect it to be noticeably faster too.
I use a Scythe Quiet Drive and find it to great at reducing drive noise, there are some other good enclosers but most don't really damp noise well.
Regards, Seb

Thanks, Seb But I was wrong, I got the older 7200.7 (ST380011A) I'll try to compare them when the 500GB arrives.
