How do I undervolt a Fan?

Post by JohnnyWakko » Mon Aug 07, 2006 7:05 pm

Gday

Wondering, how does one undervolt a fan?

I'm looking into purchaseing this model:

AUS$49.50 Scythe Samurai Z

and was wondering how I can undervolt it, as its cousin Scythe Katana which I am assuming will be the same fan, is mega quite when undervolted.

EDIT: I think the only way is to buy a fan controller, is this correct?

When undervolting a CPU heatsink fan it might be preferable to use a fan controller, but there are other ways. This solution is the most widely used I suppose.

That looks might tricky and involved doesn't it? I'll have to have a read to get a closer look. Hmmm, re wiring, not my fortae.

If your motherboard is half decent, just plug it in and undervolt it from Speedfan in Windows.

Exactly what motherboard do you have? Some of the newer ones have DC voltage control as well as PWM control. On these boards, the BIOS (or SpeedFan) can undervolt a fan that has a 3-pin connector.

That motherboard does not have any fan control at all.

You will need to use a fan controller, or get an inline resistor-based voltage reducer.
