939 FX Cooler Ninja or Thermalright

Post by desert0mirage » Fri Sep 14, 2007 8:34 pm

Hi all. I own an FX-53 processor and I would like to overclock it, but the stock cooler won't allow me to. I am undecided but the Scythe Ninja Plus Rev. B, and the Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme seem to get good reviews. The obvious draw to the Ninja is price as it is half the price of the Thermalright before fan. I am just worried that it will not sit properly since anandtech and others here speak of the pushpins not being secure. Does anyone have any thoughts?? Thanks guys!

PS I have a dfi lanparty UT nF4 Ultra D board, not sure if that will make a difference, but can't hurt. Here it is http://us.dfi.com.tw/Product/xx_product ... LP&SITE=US

I would go with the Ninja. It's cheaper and can cool better in low-airflow. The only real problem with the Ninja in the past has been the horrible LGA775 mounting system, but as you're using socket 939 that shouldn't be a problem.

So the pins hold it onto a 939 fine? Its only a problem with the 775?

Push-pins are intel's only. AM2 mechanism is that you hook two clips on retention bracket and that's it.

so that you know, for K8 which Ultra-120 has 2-point attachment, the Ultra-120-series does worse than for LGA-775, which has 4-point attachment. As for AMD, ultra-120-series is good, while for LGA-775 its superb.

Hey, I was looking around on Newegg, and was about to purchase the ninja, but then I saw that this one got great reviews. ZALMAN CNPS9500 LED 92mm http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835118223
I read the review of it here, and they said it provided great cooling, but was quite noisy. I was wondering if anyone had heard it.

At 5v with regular fan is around 20 dB/A not the smoothest sound charasterics but quiet for most. At full power, its like vacuum cleaner but does great cooling.

I had this, CNPS 9500 AM2: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835118004 it was good. I liket his version more than original 9500, since nickel plating ( and prevents some copper corrosion, which is plagued non-nickel plated Zalmans in humid conditions ) looks better and the green led fan looks awesome ^^ Price is same.

Hmmm, it is very tempting, since it comes with the fanmate, so I can turn it up when gaming... I may go for that one, since you had a good experience. Thanks for the input!

Yeah, I liked it. I wish I would still have it. I changed that into Scythe Ninja. I didn't regret swap, but CNPS 9500 was beautiful with capital B. And it cooled very well. But I wanted most silent so I went Ninja ^^

So the AM2 processor and the 939 fit very much in the same fashion? Sorry, I really do not want the heatsink to bend my mobo or break off because of weight.

the AM2/K8 attachment is really secure and Zalman is pretty light weighted. You won't be able to breake your mobo with CNPS 9500 unless you throw your case around. I had my CNPS 9500 AM2 on my nForce 4 Mobo cooling 3000+ venice.

i have the ninja currently and have had the zalman, I would pick the Ninja hands down. Its stock fan is decent even at high voltage and it has superior cooling power. On my 939 system it fits great.

The zalman's fan will cool fine but it will cost some noise. If the rest of the computer is not overly quiet then the zalman should be ok.

watch out for tall caps that are close to the socket, as I have on my gigabyte motherboards.
