Low Profile Heatsink

Post by starsky » Mon Apr 26, 2004 6:06 pm

I am building a Micro ATX Format box to use at LAN events and the like... and I am "attempting" to keep it quiet.

I have started with:
An Albatron KM400A-Pro MicroATX motherboard
A MicroATX Case that has a decent PSU, and oddly has a 40m panaflo intake fan in the front left (which I will remove).

I am now tossing up on CPU/Heatsink/Fan combo for this box. I am thinking of getting a low profile Heatsink, and then Cutting a gaping big hole in the case and installing a Panaflo 120mm L series, or Pabst 120mm (and grill) to do exhaust and CPU cooling all in one hit....

Feedback & suggestions ?

Just two:
The Panaflo 120mm L series is not low profile. They're 38mm thick.

Also, the general consensus is that all (or nearly all, dunno about the Nexus) 120mm fans need to be undervolted in order to operate quietly.

sthayashi,
I already have a stock of 120mm fans.. but thanks for reminding everyone about the size of the panaflo !

The intent is to use the Panaflo or the Pabst (inside the case, undervolted to 5-7v) in conjunction with a LOW PROFILE heatsink... otherwise they wouldn't fit..... hence the LOW PROFILE question....

Sorry, that's why I was slightly confused about low profileness :)

Anyways, it might be helpful to know what CPU you're planning on throwing in there.

I'd go for something in "skived" "copper" "low profile" Google says:

etc.

You could go for an Alpha one. I have one of those in my micro-atx and there's over and there's about 4cm headroom above the 80cm cpu fan. Dunno about the width of your case compared to mine though. Alpha heatsinks are also designed with sucking fans in mind which should benefit your plan.

BUT I don't think adequate airflow will be directed through the heatsink unless you duct the heatsink onto the fan, thus making all case exhaust pass through the heatsink. But maybe your case doesn't have room for that?

Why don't you firstly attempt to do this experiment with an 80cm fan, and duct this one to the heatsink first. Then if you decide to cut a bigger hole in the case for a 120cm fan, no worries.

Cheers,
Graham

Thanks for the suggestions gowarth. Problem is no holes in the mobo... I normally exclusivley buy mobo's with 4 holes, but not in this case, as I am thinking cheap and small....

So I need a lugged heatsink. Starting to think about the low profile arctic cooling Slim Silent Pro TC
