Another thought:
- Get the cheapest 120mm fan with open corners you can get.
- Cut out the fins and motor.
- Screw the fan of your choice on top of the remaining frame.
- Mount it on your XP-120.
That should remove the dead spot under the hub and reduce some noise from turbulence.

P.S. The cheapest fan is of course the loud one you have lying in a box somewhere, that came with the case you bought.

Nexus 120 mm Fan also has closed corners.

See the link

That is some bad news that Nexus itself forgot to tell us.

So, other than the Accousti Fan, and the Enermax version of the Globe ... do we have any other 120 mm contender (quiet, of course) that we CAN mount?

The list seems to be getting somewhat short.

Hmm - I suppose Pabst is one brand we've not mentioned yet (and I've zilch experience with ANY of their fans...).

SilenX fans are open corner and only 25mm thick. I've never tried them myself, but quite a few members like them. They are no cheaper than AcoustiFans, unfortunately.

The XP-120?

It's available in the US.

I'll get it as soon as I can ... (which should be hopefully in 1-2 weeks in the UK... *fingers crossed*).

Still deciding on which fan (though most likely Accousti Fan at this point).

heatpipe orientation?

Post by NeilBlanchard » Sat Jul 24, 2004 6:03 pm

Hello:

I wonder how the socket mounting and heatpipe orientation are going to affect things? The systemcooling.com preview shows them looping upwards in inverted "U's" -- how can this work?

Oh, and *where* are they available :?: :!:

Although sidewindercomputers.com is cheaper than svc.com, they will force you to buy a 120mm fan with XP-120. :?

Another reviewer has a sample in the mail headed to him; don't know exactly when his review will be up, but let's all hope sooner rather than later. Apparently, TR had some serious issues getting the thing into production, which is why there's been such a delay since announcement (and in getting us the darn sample).

It's quite amusing (annoying?) to note that ThermalRight don't have the XP-120 listed yet on their own site. It'd be nice if they'd give at least a few pointers on how the critter performs in the different positions... (they had a *-system for the SP-94 too after all...)

a thing maybe a lot of people overlook is the combined weight of the sink and a fan
at their website the sink weighs 370g and their fan weighs another 270g, making it 640 total ..... the total weight's pretty heavy to be hanging off the standard 478 retainer i'd think

The SP94 weighs 590 grams, without a fan. With a 92mm fan it wil still weigh more then the XP120 would with its 120mm fan, yet there have been zero reports of it (or any other commercially sold cooler) being too heavy for the motherboard.

The XP-120 even with a fan is still nothing compared to the boulder-like weight of the Zalman 7000Cu. 773g and yet no cracked silicon for me!

it's really big, and the 12cm fan mounting option is awesome, but 12ch fans work best on caseflow rather than component cooling. They just don't move the air needed, and if they do, it's over a wider range (i.e. not specific enough).

I don't know though, it might have uses, but i think when reviews do come out, they'll end in:

"...it truely is an innovation for the silence market, but it simply doesn't cool as effectively as cheaper, smaller hsf out there..."

No, This initial release of the XP-120 is for Pentium 4 only. A future release will have an additional bracket for AMD K8 processors. So be patient.
