best socket/cpu for mounting heatsink

Post by pychiquata » Mon Jul 26, 2004 12:35 am

I'm sure this topic has come up before. It's just that i cannot find it

What is the best socket/cpu combo for an easy install of the heatsink? The socket A athlons seem very fragile, also the mobo's for socket A cpu's seem less 'heatsink friendly' than the intel socket 478.

easy placement

I guess it depends mostly on which heatsink you use. There are different attachment methods. Ive installed a cooler on a socket a and a socket 754. I like the 754 best, but that might be because my new pc has it. Anyway, i recomend the zalman 7000, its easy to place. Ive tried thermaltake silent viking and it was very difficult to place.

Hope this helps

S478 is the easiest I've ever used. Between the heat spreader that covers (i.e protects) the core of the CPU and the standard Intel retention bracket (that assures easy "snap-on" mounting of the heatsink and correct, even pressure on the IHS) you can't get much more user-friendly than that.

ting - your reply helped :D Good to see the zalman 7000 is not only good coolingwise but also 'do-able' installationwise.

Ralph - thanks! I just might go for a zalman 7000 on a s478

Ralf ofcourse.....

I once asked a g-friend how to spell her name after dating for months. It's not your name, it's my brain...

Athlon 64 sockets are pretty much the same as socket 478 (both use 4-hole backplates), but somewhat less "standard": make sure you have the right backplate. Some have screwholes, some have clips. And evidently on some mobos the backplate is permanently attached.. and some heatsinks don't come with a backplate, assuming your mobo will have the "correct" one.. etc.
