Quit CPU cooler that will fit in a limited space

Post by Kevin Ar18 » Mon Dec 13, 2004 4:07 pm

I'm looking for a quiet CPU cooler with as low a cost as possible (say not more than the Zalmans) but that can fit in a limited space.
Use this motherboard for reference:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDe ... 160&depa=0
In my current system, there is only a few mm between the motherboard and the power supply; thus, the heatsink can't go over the edge of the motherboard very far.
Possible system:
Socket 478
Pentium 4 Prescott @ ~3Ghz

Note: I have limited time, so I thought I'd post this question while I look at the various options that are listed in the recommended section.

Have you looked into the Nexus low profile heatsinks?

I was just looking at that. :) But I couldn't make sense of it. There were three areas of concern:
1) The CPU might be a Prescott around 3Ghz. However, that particular page shows two different noise levels for the Prescott at that level and I'm not sure what to make of it. Will it sometimes be loud?
2) Also, I don't know whether the Nexus cools as good, better, or worse than a stock Intel heatsink.
3) Third, the maximum recommended CPU to use it with is kind of close to a 3Ghz Prescott, which makes me a little uncomfortable.

P.S. I updated the first post to include possible system info.

The Alpha?

Post by NeilBlanchard » Mon Dec 13, 2004 7:30 pm

Hello Kevin:

What about the Alpha? It will not overhang the rectangle that is the "allowed" space...

Are you referring to this one?

BTW, here's one I came to at the last minute:

not sure if it will be good or not
