In the BIOS, go into the hardware monitor and set the fan to 'Ignore'. You won't get the warning then, but if the fan fails you will also get no warning. I use fan monitoring software in Windows.

About the temps, I can only think that perhaps the heatsink is not sitting flush on the cpu. Perhaps the base of the heatsink is bowed or something, although I imagine you would have seen that when you installed it. Is the heatsink firmly in place?

thanks vertigo, just wondering if there is any way to lower the default warning fan speed in BIOS, for example, if it's giving warning when the speed is lower 2500 rpms, can I lower that limit to 1300 rpms, maybe?

I think the heatsink itself is fine, and during the installation, I didn't notice anything wrong with it, and it's pretty tight with the CPU now. Do you think it would possibly be the case that because the temperature sensor on the mobo is closer to some warm part of the heatsink whereas before it may not be! so the mobo is sort of mis-reading the temperature? Thanks.

I don't know any way to adjust the fan warning speed. Try to plug the fan into the 'case-fan' header, perhaps it has a lower threshold.

It could be that the bigger heatsink is closer to the sensor. Since you have that heatsink, let me make a suggestion. The XP/90 is, in my opinion, the best heatsink to use for a 'suck' configuration, where the fan sucks air from the cpu.

For that to be worthwhile, you must ensure the hot air leaves the case straight away. The way to do that is to ensure that the CFM of the case fan is greater than the CFM of the cpu fan. It works really well if you have a 120mm exhaust fan.

That's one option you have to try to reduce temps.

that's the exact set-up I have now, a 120mm fan is directly facing the CPU fan. Is there any other way? Thanks

Are you using a fanless power supply? What case fans/vents do you have? Do you have any intake fans?

No, I've got this TruePower 380 which comes with my Sonata and the default case fan.

All I can tell you is that I have an XP/90 with an 80mm Aerocool fan sucking @ 5v, and a Nexus 120mm exhausting at the back @ 7v, and it is plenty. My Winnie 3000+ idles @ 13C over room temp, load @ 23C over room temp.

Correction: CPU idles @ 10C over ambient, under load is 22C over ambient.

Hi, my experience is that AS5 can be trick to get right. I removed my HS to clean it and put it back and temps were worse and didn't settle so I re-seated with less AS5 and it much worse. I then tried with more and was better but not as good as before, I then tried with generic white stuff and was about the same. I then had yet another go and finally got it right. I’m probably only talking 5 - 10°C except for the attempt with too little. Your high idle temp suggests mounting problem to me and I would recommend re-seating your XP-90. If you haven’t read them you might find the instructions on Arctic Silver’s website helpful.
(I'm using an XP Barton that has no heat spreader so maybe this doesn't apply to your CPU)

One question about Arctic Silver 5 tho... When you apply it to the surface of the CPU, how much do you really need? I saw the instructions on its website and it says you only need a tiny bit at the centre of the CPU, is that enough? and also, where exactly the CPU core of AMD 64 processer?

Also, how much AS5 do we need for the surface of the heatsink?

Thanks a lot.

It is right to put it on the heatsink because it usually has slight machining grooves. Typically you don't need much (if it is perfectly flat). As little as 0.2mm over the whole area of contact should be enough. I usually check that there aren't any hairs in the paste. I usually put a smidge on the cpu, just to be sure. It isn't rocket science...

On any procesor with a IHS (heat spreader) you want to put a small dot about half the size of a BB in the middle of the procesor. You should also spread a very small amount over the bottom the heatsink (just enough to tint the bottom a little bit). Press down on the cooler and wiggle it back and forth a few milimeters, then clip it in/screw it down. also, if you ever remove the cooler you have to apply new AS5, if you just put it back with whats on there you will get air bubbles, and you don't want that. Also, if you ever remove the HS take a look at how the AS5 has spread. If you did it right you should have a nice circular spread.

EDIT: Or even better, just read the directions at the Arctic Silver website.

Reread the instructions. It answers just about all your questions.
