X2 Running hot with 7700AlCu... switch to Ninja?
I've got an X2 3800+ on a Abit AN8-Sli board with the OTES cooler in a P180. Right now with the CPU fan on the 7700ALCu going at full speed the CPU temp is about 41C with the side of the case off. Gets up to about 60C under heavy load with the case door on (7800GT heats the case up pretty well).
What I'm wondering is if I might just be better off getting a Ninja Scythe and putting this 7700 in my HTPC. Anyone else vouche for this as a good idea or have the Ninjas not been doing well with the X2? I've searched and come up with alot of planed systems but not much in the way of actual numbers.

On my current system i switched from the 7000AlCU at 5V to Ninja w/Nexus at 12V. The load temp (2xPrime95) goes from 60C to 49C at stock speed, and I can't be happier. This allows me to OC my system to 2.4G @ 1.35V. Now my load temp is around 55C. (All numbers are recorded at about 24C ambient)
Do notice that ur 3800+ is supposed to be cooler than my 4400+, so with ur P180 vs my sonata, your 60C load temp is alarmingly high for the 7700 at 12V. So maybe there's something else wrong with ur airflow setup. What other fans do u have in your case?
Addy.

My 4200+ Manchester (same as your 3800+ just 200Mhz slower cores) runs fine with a fanless Ninja, all airflow provided by just one 12V Nexus at the back of my P180. Die temperature never ever exceeds 50C.
As addyngan says, your numbers really sound way high, and I doubt even terrible case airflow could cause it... try reseating the 7700AlCu and be sure to avoid bubbles. If it really is well seated, you must be running with no exhaust fans whatsoever or something?

I've got the fan on the back of the P180 set up blowing in on Medium and the front intake fan (not over any HDDs) blowing in on Low toward the GC... Even with the side of the case off it still in the 40's range for Idle.
Only thing I can think of is that CnQ is off. VCore is constant at 1.3 and so is the clock speed.
I'll reseat that 7700AlCu with some more Artic Silver and give it another shot.

Hold on... blowing in? Both of them? You want the rear fan blowing out. You *are* running with no exhaust fans whatsoever, which is not good - you want negative case pressure, not positive.mojoxp wrote:I've got the fan on the back of the P180 set up blowing in on Medium and the front intake fan (not over any HDDs) blowing in on Low toward the GC...
Okay, now I'm perplexed. I remounted the CPU, got a nice thin but reasonable layer of AS5 in there, got it all mounted nicely, and still 40-43C idle temps with fan on 2000RPMS. So I put the 120m case fans all on high... still 41. Grab the fan out of my window and have it blowing directly over the 7700AlCu... still 40C.
Has anyone seen anything like this? Is the 3800+ thermal diode/ AN8-Sli lieing to me?

How warm does the heatsink feel?mojoxp wrote:Okay, now I'm perplexed. I have a 3500 Newcastle in my P180, my temps are 36 Idle/ 56 load. This is with a $6.00 heatsink (I have a XP120 but just havent installed it yet) . You should be getting lower temps than me.
I have a rear 120 Nexus at 7v blowing out, another 120 Nexus at the top also blowing out. If you do want to run your system without a top fan you can cover the hole at the top and it will work but if you dont cover it your airflow will be messed up. I also have a 120 Nexus in the lower case area for the hds/PSU. I am not running any front fan and if I can feel air being sucked in the front fan duct. You probably don't need to use the front fan, air wants to flow with the least resistance so it will be coming in from the front duct anyway.
How much AS5 are you using? When I apply it I a use a very very thin layer. You just want it to fill up the microscopic voids between the cooler and cpu. This is a how to install it: Link

Stop blowing in from the rear. Either make it blow out or turn it off. You have nowhere for your case airflow to go and the air it can get from the rear will be warm from the PSU.mojoxp wrote:I've got the fan on the back of the P180 set up blowing in on Medium and the front intake fan (not over any HDDs) blowing in on Low toward the GC... Thanks for the advice everyone, I feel rather retarded... I didn't bother checking the actual room temps and in here it was a around 95F in here... so figuring a case temp of around 4 degres higher and CPU temps about 20F higher isn't that bad. Kicking on the AC last night got the temps more in line where they should be.
