Thermal grease with Scythe Ninja

Post by joshpape » Tue Oct 04, 2005 7:57 am

Hi,

What are peoples thoughts on the thermal grease that comes packaged with the ninja HS? Would anyone recommend buying say artic silver thermal paste instead?

Incidentaly does the Zalman VF700 come with thermal grease?

Any advice much appreciated.

Thanks,

Josh

I bought AS 5 locally and it cost me $10 Canadian. I don't see why you wouldn't buy it, seeing as the cost is negligible compared to the price of the Ninja.

No idea about the grease that comes with the ninja, but I think is came with a small amount of paste in a plastic wrapper. I would recommend different paste for the ninja. The vf700 comes with a small (1oz?) squeeze tube of standard white grease that should be quite enough for the vf700. For building my computer I simply bought a large ( 22g? for $8 ) tube of ceramique to use on everything, I'm quite happy with the ceramique and the results.

I will order some off the net now. Any recommendations as to how to remove the grease on the cpu from the stock cooler once it is removed as I have never done that before. can it just be wiped off with a tissue?

Non scratching material + Rubbing alcohol works well- but be careful, the grease makes a mess.

I think you will need to use some kind of cleaning substance. I use chemical clean acetone that I bought at the supermarket and some cotton tops. Medical grade pure alcohol works good as well (ordinary alcohol/aceton wont, e.g. bottle of scotch bad idea). Juts remember to let the liquid dissolve before you put the new grease on.

Arctic Silver sells a cleaning product if you don’t trust me:

I think I have some screen and lense cleaning wipes which may work somewhere. If not I will try alcohol from a pharmacy if they sell some.

Just about to buy some Arctic Silver 5

I clean up my grease with isopropyl alcohol and coffee filters.

How about white spirit (turpentine) or is that too strong?

I don't think turps would be a good idea as it probably leaves a residue. Use isopropyl alcohol as recommended by others, it's quite cheap and can be used for other things (eg aftershave).

I recommend using the thermal grease that comes with the Ninja. It is very easy to work with, as it flows nicely. I used about half of the satchel. There are a few threads comparing Arctic Silver and other types of thermal grease, and the consensus seems to be that there's no difference, despite manufacturer's claims. You'll get more variance in results simply from the way it has been applied.

What sort of shop would sell isopropyl alcohol?

I havent bought any thermal paste yet and my ninja and vf700 arrived today so i am going to test temperatures with just what is supplied and see how it is.

Thanks for the advice people.

My local supermarket has it, and you should definitely be able to get it from a chemist.

You might also want to try acetone \ nailpolish remover - it works a treat.. it'll take the varnish off your antiques as well!

I'll have to disagree on that one. I've read that nail polish remover contain oils that will leave a residue and hurt thermal transfer. I guess it probably wouldn't be a huge deal if it was all you had handy and used it, but since 91% isopropyl alcohol is a few dollars at Walmart and other department stores, I see no reason not to pick some up.
