CNPS6000 with Athlon x2 4400?

Post by David Cole » Sun Jan 22, 2006 5:30 pm

Grateful for opinions on whether the old CNPS6000 will (a) fit an Asus 8N32-SLI with an Athlon x2 4400 and (b) provide enough cooling using a suspended 92mm or 120mm. I am using a 9500 but it's too noisy.

Thanks.

Can't say about fit, but I seriously doubt it will provide sufficient cooling. I've never used 6000, but 3100 had serious trouble cooling AXP2400+ level CPUs. The fan had to be run on medium/high setting, at which point it was clearly audible, even noisy and the idle temperatures we still in the 40's, load approaching 60. Not good. Of course 6000 is much larger than 3100, but I would imagine x2-4400 should run hotter than A-XP2400. Unless you already have 6000 or can get one for real cheap, like $10, I would suggest you go for a nicer cooler. CNPS6000 can be bought for what, $20-25, while Scythe Ninja for $45 shipped, these extra $20 will be very well worth it, trust me.

PS didn't see you were from UK, but it's still the same. Spend money for a nicer cooler.

Thanks. I am put off changing my heatsink because it means taking my motherboard out of the case and fitting a new backplate. Are there any decent very quiet cooler units that will not require this?

Thanks

From Zalmans site:
The 6000alcu is rated to cool up to a athlon xp 3000+.
The 6000cu is rated to cool any athlon xp.

Neither mention an athlon 64 or athlon 64 x2.

Considering an athlon 64 x2 can consume 30+ watts more than an athlon xp, it would be a bad idea.

That info would also indicate that the 6000 is not compatioble with socket 754, 939 and 940.

it should be able to cool the x2 4400 the problem is fitting it, why not suspend a fan infront of the 9500.

i have an x2 [email protected] on stock volts with an 9500 and i connected it to my dfi mobo, the fan doesnt even come on all the time because it doesnt get hot enough

That's an interesting idea. I hadn't thought of unplugging the 9500 and using a quieter fan above it on a bracket. I'll have to have a look and see if there' enough clearance above the 9500 for a fan. If there is enough clearance a Nexus 120mm might be interesting. Thanks for that.

Don't use that old flower heatsink, I don't know what Zalman were thinking when they made it. Change the fan on your 9500, it should hardly need any airflow.
