PIII 550 with a VGA cooler?

Post by jmak124 » Sun Feb 19, 2006 3:49 pm

While on the search for a silent cooler for the PIII, I thought about something.

A P3's cpu die is about the same size as one for a modern video card. However, I don't know if a modern video card is hotter than a P3. If it is, then that means a modern video card cooler can be adapted to use on a P3 right?

I happen to have a Vantec Iceberq cooler on hand and according to the packaging, its recommended for:

Nvidia
GeForce3 Ti 200, GeForce3 Ti 500, GeForce4 MX 420, GeForce4 MX 440, GeForce4 MX 440 SE, GeForce4 MX 440 8X, GeForce4 MX 460,
GeForce FX 5600, GeForce FX 5200

ATI
Radeon 9000 - 9800 PRO

I know that the PIII generates about 25-35 watts of heat. If anyone knows if the heat generated from any of those cards is within that range, please let me know.

At least those Radeon cards are within range, the top power draw of the 9800 PRO is slightly below 50W, somewhere around 30W at idle. Doesn't the Vantec Iceberq use a high RPM 50mm fan? If that's the case you better continue your search for a quiet cooling solution for the P3 cause that little fan will surely be audible (and that's an understatement).

I recently went to a swap meet and bought a Slot 1 PIII 600 stripped out of an IBM computer for $6 (he had a table full of them, and they were fairly common). Some of these OEM processors have large aluminum passive heatsinks attached to them intended to be cooled by a ducted fan/PSU nearby.

Get one of these processors (or swap the HS) and you have lots of options to cool it with a quiet fan of your choice. You could duct it or just screw or zip tie a 80mm right on it for example.

The one I have looks like this one, except the heatsink is taller, extending 3/4" past the top of the processor:

Cool... I've tried to find that cooler on ebay to no avail. However, it seems that getting a coppermine cpu will also be a good route considering they put out less heat than the earlier Katmai 550. As for the Iceberq cooler, I'll admit its audible, but to a much more tolerable level than the stock P3 fan.

I use a quiet 60 mm Nidec fan attached to the slot 1 HS of my P3-450 (using plastic tiewraps) and it keeps it pretty cool.

This is the guide I used http://www.thetechzone.com/articles/p3_ ... ove2.shtml

Works nicely, but make sure you don't do it on a table that you want to leave screw dimpling marks on, or at least use a notebook to protect the table.
