AMD Cool & Quiet with Linux. How?

Post by Laurie » Sun Dec 24, 2006 1:14 pm

Firstly I have to apologise for my incompetence, I only started out on Ubuntu yesterday. One of the last things I need to do is Cool & Quiet set-up. I've downloaded the driver package from the AMD website and it's enabled in BIOS but I have no idea what to do with the drivers. Anyone know?

PS: Cool & Quiet wasn't working when I had Windows running, even with the driver and enabled in BIOS. Could it possibly be my motherboard? Asus say it does support Cool & Quiet...

As nightmorph said, you really need to get the on-die K8 temperature sensor support compiled into your kernel. A couple of months ago it was not yet integrated into the released kernel but it was possible to patch the most recent kernel sources and then compile to get the support working.

I'm not quite sure what the situation is currently but anyways the patching + compiling isn't all that difficult. Just follow a few how-tos and pick up the relevant points to make it work. Took about half an evening for me when I was setting up my Linux home server.

the 64 bit version of ubuntu (efty) will take my A64 3000+ to 1 ghz under light loads, not sure if it makes any voltage adjustments in the process though.

I don't think this is cool n quiet in action though.

On your Asus mobo in bios enable Qfan if you have it, thats what I'm useing to control the fan speed on my 7700cu. Basically Qfan your CPU fan speed is controlled via hardware so it should not matter what OS you are running.

The only down side to qfan is you will likely have to use the ASUS pc probe software in windows to set the maximum temperature threshold, Cool and Quite just enables cpu frequancy scaling not fan speed.

And that reminded me, If you wanna make dealing with the fact that Ubuntu only includes free software a little less painful install Automatix.
