im planing on building a clone of the SPCR/EPCN designed "model one"
(based on a P150 with an Asus P5b)

but i was wonderting if the same setup can be done but with a E6600 instead of the E6400?

in other words, can the E6600 be passively colled with the Scythe Ninja (bought one last night ;)
and just a single 120mm nexus case fan?

It can :) ... I am passively cooling not only the C2D E6600, but a 7900GT (OCed @ 540 / 1550) as well (using a HR-03); the C2D is undervolted to 1.10v and with the Nexus @ 800RPM the load temp gets to 57C (for the hottest core)

Quite easily, I can run a E6600 at 3GHz with the Ninja and just a single 950rpm 120mm case inside a NSK6500 case. It can get warm with dual Prime95 but there's still 15C of headroom before it hits throttling temperature.

IMHO si not necessarely, I have an E6600 with a Noctua NH-U9F with the fan at 5v (16-17db ?), so it's NOT audible

The load temperature I mentioned (57C) was obtained after 8 hours of TAT (keep in mind that in the P180 the only fan that worked as an exhaust was the Nexus @ 800RPM, so if you also have a PSU with an 120mm fan, your temps should be better), so it's probably at least 5C more than the temp you would get by using orthos / dual-prime (the ambient temperature was 23C)

this is great news - cant wait to put this box together (and not have to hear the vacum cleaner anymore)

i appreciate the advice/info

and just curious, but r yall using a fan controler?
(or just jacking into 5v rail)

scorp, im assuming thats a typo in your sig? (youre not really running one of the nexuses at Nine THOUSAND RPM 8)

accord1999, how much do you push your machine?
r u running cpu intensive tasks/games most of the time for longer periods? (or just for tests)
im asking cause the comp im going to build will be used as a DAW (music production computer) where ill be running cpu-choking software and plugins with lots of tracks for hours at a time with cpu @ 80-90%.....so i want to make sure this thing is bullitproof

charger2000, u have a case fan too or just cpu fan?

Obviously 900RPM  (in fact it varies between 800 - 870 RPM)- I use a simple 12v->10v cable); usually when I need 5V I modify a molex to give me that (fan controllers don't act as nicely and it takes less space in the case)

I can run CPU intensive tasks without problems for days but I usually don't run completely fanless as I have a X1900XT video card and even with the IceQ3 cooling system, completely drowns the sound of the 120mm fan at 800rpm.
