I know it is two different test beds, but why the difference?

Well, figure they both cool extremely well, one way or another. I chose the U120 because it has a better mounting system (at least for LGA775), is easier to attach a fan to, and I just plain like the build quality and customer service I've gotten from Thermalright over the years. The Ninja was a bit of a pain in the butt to install by comparison, and felt quite a bit less well put together.

They do both cool well. Figure that, if one won by a small margin in one experiment and the other won by a small margin in the other experiment, both cool within the margin for error of these measurements and thus are tied. For me, Thermalright's superior mounting system for both 775 and AM2 won me over, since I insist on all heatsinks bolting through the motherboard to a backplate, though I actually selected the HR-01 since I was interested in passive use. My suggestion would be to use the Ninja if you value noise above all and the U120 if you're willing to give up a hair of noise (probably not even measurable, just from the higher fin density) to get a very secure mounting system.

Hope this helps!

I'm running a TR U120X fanless in an Antec Solo with an E6700 stock just fine. The only 2 fans in my system are the stock Tri-Cool fan that came with the Solo and the fan in the Corsair PSU.

The Tri-Cool fan is the loudest thing in my case right now. I have a Nexus fan, but I'm too lazy to switch it. I'm guessing the hard drive would be the loudest component once I switch. Overall, the only time I can hear my machine is when everybody is sleeping and everything in my house is turned off and the only thing I can hear when that happens is the whoosh from the Tri-Cool fan.

I believe that they booth cool quite well, actually i chose the Ultra 120 becuase of the easier way to mount it (for socket 775) and some stories about clerance problems with Ninja and Asus P5B series motherboards. I have coupled the Ultra 120 with a Schythe S-Flex E (1200rpm) and the temp readings that i get from TAT for my E6600 is 31-33C at idle.

It seems the bottom line is:
Fanless: Ninja
With Fan: Ultra 120
