NT06 or Thermalright Ultra-120 eXTreme?

Post by Koolpc » Sat Aug 04, 2007 2:13 am

Seen the Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme. Looks awesome. Do you think it would fit in a Silverstone TJ08? Also, would it be better at cooling that the Silverstone NT06?

yeah, s_xero, WTF is the point of such a rude and obnoxious reply? it's a shame such behaviour is not grounds for a ban from SPCR.

back on-topic, this heatsink roundup pegs the TR U-120 extreme as the best cooler right now, outclassing the NT06 by some considerable distance. I don't know the dimensions of the TJ08, so hard to say if it will fit or not.

There's a build using a Thermalright HR-01 in a TJ08 in the General Gallery - the Ultra 120 is just 2mm taller, but 22mm wider (north/south, blowing towards the rear fan), so I'd say the answer was a qualified "yes," depending on the position of your CPU socket relative to the power supply. ;)

You're asking about the width of the TJ08, and whether it fits the height of the U120X. I dunno, it'd be a tight fit.

But the big problem (for some people) with the TJ08 is, the front bezel is awfully close to the rear panel. :D There just isn't much room in between. Long video cards? Forget it! One goes on a long search for the world's shortest optical drive, which will fit with 1mm to spare...

The U120X is for cooling really hot CPUs. What a really hot CPU would be doing in the tight quarters of the TJ08, I dunno. My take, for what it's worth, is either you could use a less-extreme HSF, or you need a bigger (esp. longer) case to fit the stuff you bought the really hot CPU to drive! :P

Full disclosure: I owned a TJ08. Tossed it. It proved too tight for even my modest requirements, which did not include a video board at all (I use integrated video). :(

I like the idea of a small case. I have a Matx board too. I am using a bog standard Matx case at the mo but my temps are approx 42 idle using the NT06. Fan on lowest setting. No case fans.
