Cooling an Athlon X2 3600+ with a U120 eXtreme passively?

Post by snoopygum » Sat Aug 18, 2007 5:45 pm

Do you guys think I cool an Athlon X2 3600+ (Brisbane core, 65W) with a Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme passively in an Antec Solo case, provided that I use an intake fan in the front & an exhaust fan in the back?

This machine will basically be just a file server, idle with CnQ kicking in for 90% of the time.

It should work if the back fan is close to the Ultra 120. However, the Scythe Ninja is a better of passive heat sink and it's a lot cheaper

this should work fine, albeit you should have a fan on it that is software controlled if possible... my e6600 @ 3GHz idles with the fan turned off and the rear fan + top fan at about 25% (which in practice means the top fan is off and the rear fan is turning at about 300rpm.. noctua top fan and nexus rear fan) .. I always have the hdd fans running tho, Nexus 120mm in the front and bottom hdd compartment (P182), at like 400-700rpm depending on hdd/ambient temp...

I was cooling a C2D E6700 passively with the same heatsink in the same case with only 2 fans in the entire system: a Corsair PSU and an undervolted Nexus as exhaust. Hope this answers your question.
