Finally! Scythe Zipang officially announced with "pieps
Not "6 heat pipes", "6heat pieps". See here.
Also a low-profile shelf HSF, the "Shuriken" (probably translates as "shorty"), with a new 100mmx12mm fan with lotsa blades. 64mm high. Use the above Zipang link to see it.
And a fan controller in 5.25" and 3.5" versions which I seem to have seen a pre-release of(?).
The cheapie (<$20) infrared thermometer previously announced is now for sale at Directron in black and white models.

That Shuriken cooler looks really good to me. Too bad you can't see the fin spacing...

direct link to the shuriken cooler...
with a thin 13-blade fan which looks very interesting.
Does anyone know how accurate scythe normally is with their dBa ratings? They claim 10.5dBA at 650rpm...
And I just love the engrish marketing blurb on the zipang as well:

According to this article at vr-zone, the orientation of the Zipang's heatpipes matters:

And you could connect the fan on the HSF to a fan on the side panel with a duct. Run both fans at the lowest rpm and there you'd have a nice setup. This would also let you *I think* to omit the rear case fan.francis12 wrote:I think this heatsink should do good mostly if you have a fan on the case panel, otherwise it shouldn't perform too well.
I like the idea.

An interesting question on several levels. First, Scythe is a marketing company. They do not design, manufacture, or test fans. They use the maker's numbers, obtained from the acoustic testing facility that particular fan maker uses.murtoz wrote:Does anyone know how accurate scythe normally is with their dBa ratings? Second, I know of no testing facility anywhere that can directly measure 10.5dBA at one meter. That number comes from a form of extrapolation. Which one? I dunno. Two methods I've used are close-miking - 10.5dBA/1m = 16.5dBA/.5m = 22.5dBA/.25m in an anechoic chamber, or testing at higher RPM - 10.5dBA at 650RPM is about 28.5dBA at 1300RPM, for example. Any form of extrapolation is impure, of course, but a close number is IMHO more useful than no number at all.
SPCR religiously stays with measurements made at 1 meter, which is why their measurements commonly bump up against the noise floor. But they perform measurements in a live room... some numbers are better than no numbers at all, and anechoic chambers are doggone expensive.
Back to your original question: I personally think 10.5dBA/650RPM is reasonable for a 13-blade thin 100mm fan. The problem is, if you want a more authoritative opinion, you'd have to find a professional who a) has tested that fan b) in an anechoic chamber c) who is a disinterested party. There are over 6.5 billion rock apes on this globe, and not one of them meets those criteria.
FrostyTech has a review up claiming it's nearly silent and has quite good cooling.
