New Nexus FLC-3000 CPU cooler - 775 and 1366 compatible

Post by lodestar » Mon Sep 15, 2008 6:29 am

See

Seems a slightly eccentric design, but is the first cooler I've seen for Intel Core i7 CPUs.

errr.... right.... weird... VERY weird...
Can anyone think of a god reason for the angle of the sink ? Maybe to reduce air recycling inside the case... better idea anyone ?

Perhaps to better cool VRMs, while still allowing relatively unobstructed airflow? Although I'm pretty sure the past has shown that a straight-down cooler doesn't suffer from much backpressure...

According to Nexus themselves, the angle creates "a perfect flow over the motherboard."

If we take a look at the upcoming Nehalem motherboards (this is the only one I've seen), it looks like it should bring some more air over the Northbridge.

Apart from the angle, only the added socket 1366 (Core i7) compatability I guess, and that has been achieved in a fairly simple fashion, see

Well except for the obvious S1366 compatibility I just wondered what that angle actually does compared to the older model.
Maybe it's for getting better airflow?

It's neither a top-down cooler nor a tower cooler. It won't cool the CPU as well as a tower and it won't have as wide of a range as top-down cooler for components around the socket. It looks like a tilted BTF-90 and it looks nice, and I'd bet that's exactly why it is as it is.

92mm fan... which probably leaks big part of airflow elsewhere than toward heatsink...
Now why I'm not expecting any serious performance?

Thermalright will release LGA1366 mounting kit when Nehalem is released and also Noctua will have mounting parts available then.

And here's some shots of Nehalem boards:

CPU nearly dropping "over the board" in some... they must be betting on users having big cases for having enough space for big heatsinks.

(props to Gigabyte for not using PCIe x1 "hard limited" slots)

Well, tune it to its maximum of 2500 RPM and it's probably decent. Like it's noise probably.
